Brother Rice Dominates Loyola in CCL/ESCC Blue Opener

In a commanding performance, the Brother Rice Crusaders defeated the Loyola Ramblers 28-6 in their CCL/ESCC Blue Division opener on September 29, 2023. The victory showcased Brother Rice’s defensive strength, as they limited Loyola to just 21 rushing yards, while their offense effectively utilized a potent attack.

Kameron McGee led the way for Brother Rice, contributing significantly with two sacks and multiple tackles for loss. The defensive unit, ranked No. 1 in Class 7A, demonstrated resilience as they overcame early setbacks, including two turnovers in the first half. “We’re the best in the state,” said McGee. “That’s our mentality. We’re going to come for everybody.”

Loyola, currently ranked No. 3 in Class 8A, initially took the lead with a 34-yard field goal by Zak Zeman after a turnover placed them at the 2-yard line. Despite this early advantage, Brother Rice quickly responded. According to head coach Casey Quedenfeld, the team recognized the significance of this matchup, stating, “They’re such an incredible program and we knew we had to come out and swing first.”

The turning point came in the second quarter when Brother Rice quarterback C.J. Gray connected with Lucas Strang for a 21-yard touchdown pass. Gray, who finished the game with 332 total yards and four touchdowns, helped shift the momentum as the Crusaders surged ahead.

As the game progressed, Brother Rice’s defense continued to thwart Loyola’s efforts, forcing them into difficult situations. Liggins, an Illinois recruit, emphasized the importance of their practice leading up to the game, noting, “When you have hard practices, you’ll wind up having a good game.” His commitment to discipline and teamwork was evident throughout the match.

In the second half, Brother Rice maintained its pressure, opening the third quarter with a strong defensive stand that forced Loyola into a three-and-out. Their offensive tempo became a crucial factor, leading to a 5-yard touchdown run by Gray that extended their lead to 14-6.

Despite a promising interception by Loyola linebacker Henry Newton, which gave them favorable field position, Brother Rice’s defense held firm again, limiting the Ramblers to another field goal before halftime.

As the fourth quarter unfolded, Brother Rice’s offense capitalized on a key defensive stop, resulting in a stunning 71-yard touchdown run by Gray. The game concluded with a 47-yard touchdown pass from Gray to Darrion Clinton, solidifying the Crusaders’ dominant performance with 403 total yards of offense.

Loyola’s sophomore wide receiver Jordan McKinley reflected on the defeat, acknowledging the need for improvement. “We have to put our heads down and get back to work,” he stated.

With this victory, Brother Rice improved to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the CCL/ESCC Blue Division, establishing themselves as a formidable contender in the state. As they look to maintain their momentum, the Crusaders know that hard work and discipline will be essential in the weeks to come.
