BC Ferries Achieves Record Summer Despite Mechanical Challenges

BC Ferries reported a record-breaking summer season, carrying 9.4 million passengers and 3.7 million vehicles from May 15 to August 31, 2024. This represents an increase of 2.2 percent in passenger traffic and 2 percent in vehicle numbers compared to the previous year. Despite facing nearly 600 mechanical issues across its fleet during the season, the company maintained a commendable on-time performance of 80.4 percent, an improvement of 3.7 percent from 2023.
Melanie Lucia, Vice-President of Customer Experience at BC Ferries, highlighted the dedication and preparation that led to this success, stating, “This summer showed what’s possible when preparation meets dedication.” The ferry operator successfully completed 28,956 roundtrips throughout the summer, including more than 1,000 additional sailings on major routes, indicating a robust operational capacity.
Fleet Challenges and Maintenance Efforts
Despite the successful summer, BC Ferries continues to grapple with the challenges of operating an aging fleet. Prior to the summer season, the corporation completed 21 vessel refits and maintenance projects. Nevertheless, issues persisted, particularly with the Queen of New Westminster, which experienced 29 mechanical problems during the summer. While BC Ferries assured customers that these mechanical issues did not disrupt service, each incident required immediate attention to ensure the vessel remained operational.
One notable incident involved a propeller shearing off, resulting in a leak of 800 litres of oil. This incident has since prompted the vessel to be out of service until September 30, 2024. The BC Ferries management has emphasized the importance of ongoing maintenance to keep the fleet running smoothly, acknowledging the operational difficulties posed by aging equipment.
As BC Ferries looks to the future, the organization remains focused on improving its services and addressing fleet challenges. The innovative measures taken over the summer reflect the corporation’s commitment to enhancing customer experience while navigating the complexities of an aging fleet.
The success of the recent summer season serves as a strong foundation for BC Ferries as it continues to work on its long-term vision for sustainable and efficient operations.
