Baker Lake Celebrates Successful 2025 Festival by the Lake
The annual Festival by the Lake in Baker Lake took place from August 22 to August 24, 2025, attracting large crowds and generating a vibrant atmosphere. This year’s event has been praised by attendees and organizers alike, with many considering it one of the best festivals the community has ever hosted.
Karen Yip, the community wellness coordinator, highlighted the festival’s focus on celebrating the achievements of the Grade 12 graduates from Jonah Amitnaaq Secondary School. The event featured a variety of performers, drawing enthusiastic responses from festival-goers. Among the entertainers were local talents such as Aavsia, Agaaqtoq, and Angotitok Band, along with acts like Mr. Circus and Rosalie Pissuk.
The festival offered a wealth of activities and attractions. Attendees enjoyed bouncy slides, obstacle courses, and a range of carnival games. There were also prizes awarded throughout the weekend, and festival-goers savored meals provided by Agnico Eagle Mines, a community feast, and barbecue offerings. Additional activities included face painting, balloon twisting, and traditional performances such as jigging contests, drum dancing, and throat singing.
Yip expressed gratitude to the many sponsors and individuals who contributed to the event’s success. “The hamlet would also like to thank our sponsors and individuals who helped to make this event possible,” she stated. Key supporters included Agnico Eagle Mines, Calm Air, Nunamiut Lodge, and the Department of Justice, among others. Yip noted the contributions of local leaders, including Mayor James Taipana, and community figures such as Jimmy Qaqqaq.
Reflecting on the festival’s success, Yip remarked, “We’ve had so many good festivals over the years, but, after a little thought, this Festival by the Lake was one of the best. It was a fun weekend.” With its lively atmosphere and diverse offerings, this year’s festival has set a high standard for future celebrations in Baker Lake.
