Alpine Aviation Moves Floatplanes to Whitehorse for Winter
As temperatures drop in the Yukon, Alpine Aviation has begun its annual operation to relocate floatplanes from Schwatka Lake to Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport. The transfer commenced on October 10, 2023, with a convoy of trucks transporting several aircraft, including a Cessna 206 registered as C-FGSI and another as C-GROD. The process signifies the conclusion of floatplane activities on the lake and prepares the fleet for winter.
The first convoy left Schwatka Lake at 2 p.m. on October 10 via the Robert Service Highway. According to Meghan Pennington, a representative from Alpine Aviation, another convoy is scheduled for October 14, 2023, also at 2 p.m.. This seasonal migration is crucial for the company as colder weather sets in, ensuring that the aircraft are safely stored for winter.
Upon arrival at the airport, staff will prepare the planes for the winter months, which may involve fitting them with wheels or skis. This process is affectionately referred to as getting “new shoes” by the team. The transition is essential for maintaining operational readiness during the colder season.
In a social media update on October 10, Alpine Aviation expressed gratitude to Truckways Transport in Whitehorse and local highway crews for their support in facilitating a safe journey for the aircraft. This collaboration underscores the importance of community partnerships in ensuring the smooth operation of seasonal relocations.
As the days grow shorter and the temperatures continue to drop, the movement of these aircraft marks a significant shift in the operational landscape for aviation in the Yukon. With the floatplanes now on their way to the airport, Alpine Aviation is prepared to transition to winter operations, ensuring that they are ready for whatever the season may bring.
