Abbotsford Middle School has officially opened eight new classrooms, increasing capacity by 200 seats to accommodate the growing student population in the region. This addition comes as Abbotsford experiences a surge in families relocating to the area, prompting local schools to expand their facilities.

Bowinn Ma, Minister of Infrastructure, emphasized the importance of this development, stating, “As more families choose Abbotsford, our schools must grow with them. These new classrooms ensure more students can learn closer to home, serving the community now and for years to come.” Construction began in the spring of 2025 and the new two-storey addition is designed to enhance learning environments for students.

The expansion includes not only eight new classrooms but also flexible collaboration spaces on each floor, an elevator, restrooms, and mechanical facilities. Upgrades to the site further include a new basketball court and playground, providing additional recreational space for students.

Lisa Beare, Minister of Education and Child Care, stated, “Every student deserves access to safe, inspiring learning environments. These new classrooms will help meet growing demand and ensure students and staff have the space and resources they need to thrive today and well into the future.” The addition at Abbotsford Middle School is part of a broader initiative by the province to address rising enrollment numbers and the need for modern educational facilities.

Since 2017, the provincial government has invested over $80 million to create more than 1,000 new seats and 750 seismically safer seats for students in Abbotsford. This includes a dedicated $12 million for the new addition at Abbotsford Middle School, demonstrating a commitment to enhancing educational infrastructure.

Furthermore, for the 2025-26 school year, the Abbotsford school district has received over $7 million through minor capital programs. This funding supports essential building maintenance, energy-efficiency upgrades, and the acquisition of new buses, further improving the learning environment for students.

In addition to the middle school expansion, recent developments at Margaret Stenerson Elementary and Auguston Traditional Elementary schools have created space for new childcare facilities on school grounds, addressing the needs of families in the community.

Stan Petersen, Chair of the Abbotsford Board of Education, remarked, “This new addition at Abbotsford Middle School is a direct investment in our students’ and our community’s future. These new classrooms will support growing enrollment and ensure students have safe, modern spaces built to support their success for years to come.”

The provincial government has demonstrated a strong commitment to education, having allocated more than $6.6 billion to build schools across British Columbia. This investment has resulted in nearly 46,500 new student spaces and over 39,000 seismically safer seats in schools throughout the province, including the significant improvements in Abbotsford.

As the population of British Columbia continues to grow, the province remains dedicated to collaborating with school districts and municipalities to provide all students with safe and modern places to learn. The expansion at Abbotsford Middle School is a key step in ensuring that educational facilities meet the demands of a thriving community.
