Aatos Koivu Reflects on Tough Season with TPS Turku
Aatos Koivu, son of former NHL star Saku Koivu, is candid about his challenging season with TPS Turku in the Finnish Liiga. Drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the third round, Aatos acknowledges the difficulties he has faced, managing only seven points in 30 games so far this season. In contrast, at the same age, his father recorded an impressive 53 points in 47 games for TPS Turku.
Adjusting to a new position has contributed to Aatos’s struggles. He is currently playing on the wing rather than his natural center position, a change that takes time for any young player adapting to professional hockey. “As difficult as it is, it’s going well. I’ve had some really good games and others where I’ve had a few things to work on, but it’s going better than last season,” Aatos stated in a recent interview.
Acknowledging Challenges and Looking Ahead
Understanding the need for self-reflection and hard work, Aatos expressed optimism about his future performance. “It’s been tough, but positive at the same time. I’m going through ups and downs,” he said. His honesty about the season’s challenges is a crucial step toward improvement. Aatos currently has one less point in one fewer game compared to the previous year, but his awareness of his situation and willingness to adapt are promising signs for his development.
The young forward is also excited about representing Finland in the upcoming World Junior Championship, a prospect he missed last year due to mononucleosis. He aims to make a significant impact on the Finnish junior team, stating, “I want to play a big role on this team. I want to be sent out on the ice in all situations, on the power play, in the final minute… I always want to be on the ice.”
According to Lauri Mikkola, the Finnish junior team’s coach, the Liiga presents unique challenges for young players, but the junior tournament offers Aatos a chance to demonstrate his skills more freely. “The Liiga is not an easy league for a youngster of his age to get used to. Here, we’ll trust him at equal strength and on the power play,” Mikkola noted.
Immediate Impact in the World Juniors
In Finland’s opening game of the World Junior Championship, Aatos quickly made his presence felt, scoring a goal that showcased his offensive abilities. This performance could serve as a confidence booster for him as he continues his season with TPS Turku. The opportunity to compete at this level might reignite the spark needed for Aatos to thrive as he progresses through his hockey career.
In other hockey news, Matthew Tkachuk of the Florida Panthers returned to the ice for light practice, a positive development for the team. Additionally, a minor transaction occurred between the Minnesota Wild and the Tampa Bay Lightning, with the Wild acquiring forward Boris Katchouk in exchange for Michael Milne.
As the hockey season unfolds, Aatos Koivu’s journey reflects the ups and downs of young athletes navigating the professional landscape. His commitment to improvement and eagerness to contribute to his team’s success are qualities that may ultimately define his career in the sport.
