In a dramatic season opener on September 10, 2023, Aaron Rodgers made a standout debut for the Pittsburgh Steelers, throwing four touchdown passes to secure a thrilling 34-32 comeback victory against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The game showcased Rodgers’ skill and poise, particularly during a critical second half where he threw two touchdown passes in just 50 seconds.

With the Steelers trailing 32-31 and just over three minutes remaining, Rodgers took command of the offense. He expertly guided Pittsburgh into Jets territory, setting up Chris Boswell for a decisive 60-yard field goal that put the Steelers ahead with only 1:03 left on the clock. Boswell’s kick proved pivotal in the tightly contested matchup, marking his second successful field goal of the game.

The Jets, under new head coach Aaron Glenn, had a chance to respond with less than a minute to play. Quarterback Justin Fields, also facing his former team, aimed to lead a drive for a potential winning field goal. However, on fourth-and-3, Fields’ pass to Garrett Wilson fell incomplete after a hard hit from Jalen Ramsey, sealing the Steelers’ victory.

Rodgers completed 22 of 30 passes for 244 yards, with touchdown connections to Calvin Austin III, Jaylen Warren, Jonnu Smith, and Ben Skowronek. His performance was particularly noteworthy after being released by the Jets earlier in the offseason, showcasing his ability to thrive under pressure.

Fields, meanwhile, delivered an impressive performance of his own, finishing 16 of 22 for 218 yards and a touchdown pass to Wilson. He also rushed for two touchdowns, making history as the first player since 1948 to throw for over 200 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for over 50 yards and two scores in a season opener.

The game saw its turning point in the fourth quarter when Rodgers found Warren for a 5-yard touchdown, narrowing the Steelers’ deficit to 26-24. Pittsburgh quickly regained possession after Kenneth Gainwell forced a fumble on the subsequent kickoff, allowing Rodgers to capitalize with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Austin, giving the Steelers a 31-26 lead.

The Jets initially took control of the game, with Fields connecting with Wilson for a 33-yard touchdown early on. Despite a missed extra point, New York maintained momentum, scoring on their first four drives—a feat not accomplished since 2016. The Jets’ offensive efforts included a strong showing from Braelon Allen, who rushed for a touchdown, giving New York a brief 19-10 lead.

In the aftermath of the game, injuries impacted both teams. The Steelers lost safety DeShon Elliott to a knee injury in the second quarter, while linebacker Malik Harrison exited in the fourth quarter with a knee issue. For the Jets, running back Kene Nwangwu suffered a hamstring injury early in the game.

Looking ahead, the Steelers will host the Seattle Seahawks in their home opener next Sunday, while the Jets prepare to face the Buffalo Bills, marking another significant matchup in their AFC East rivalry. The season has begun with excitement, and the performances of both Rodgers and Fields promise an engaging journey ahead for fans and teams alike.
