Winnipeg Airport Enhances Security with New CT X-Ray Scanner
Travellers at Winnipeg Richardson International Airport are experiencing a significant enhancement in security screening following the installation of the airport’s first CT X-ray scanner. This advanced technology, introduced by the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority, allows passengers to keep their liquids and electronics inside their carry-on luggage, streamlining the security process.
Improved Efficiency for Passengers
The new CT scanner was installed at security Line 4 and is part of a broader multi-year initiative aimed at upgrading security systems across Canadian airports. According to Jessie Schmidtke, a communications specialist for the Winnipeg Airports Authority, the remainder of the security lines are expected to be upgraded by the end of 2026. Passengers using the upgraded line can now pass through security without the need to unpack approved liquids, aerosols, gels, or large electronics such as laptops.
“This is just really going to help with improving those processing times, getting through security quicker,” Schmidtke stated. She emphasized that this improvement would enhance the overall passenger experience.
Wider Implementation Across Canada
Winnipeg is not alone in adopting this technology. CT X-ray scanners have been implemented at eight airports throughout Canada, including major hubs in Halifax, Montreal, Quebec City, Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary, and Vancouver. This national effort aims to modernize airport security and improve efficiency for all travellers.
Feedback from passengers at Winnipeg has been overwhelmingly positive. Gagandeep Kaur, travelling through the airport recently, remarked on the convenience of the new system. “It is very convenient,” Kaur noted. “You don’t have to take out your liquids, and it will also increase the efficiency in regards to time and effort.”
Similarly, Hussam Karim praised the new technology, calling it “a great idea.” He anticipates that it will significantly expedite the security process, particularly during peak travel times.
As airports continue to evolve and adopt new technologies, the introduction of CT X-ray scanners represents a critical step towards enhancing security while simultaneously improving the travel experience for passengers.
