Taiwan Unveils Zaha Hadid’s Final Bridge Design Ahead of 2026 Opening
Taiwan has reached a pivotal milestone in its infrastructure development with the installation of the final segment of the Danjiang Bridge’s steel decking. This achievement connects the east and west banks of the Tamsui River estuary for the first time, confirming the highly anticipated opening date of May 12, 2026. Designed by the acclaimed architect Zaha Hadid, who passed away in 2016, the bridge embodies Taiwan’s architectural aspirations and engineering capabilities.
World’s Longest Single-Mast Bridge Set to Make History
Upon its completion, the Danjiang Bridge will hold the title of the world’s longest single-mast, asymmetric cable-stayed bridge, measuring 920 meters across the Tamsui River near Taipei. Its most distinctive characteristic is the impressive 200-meter central mast, which stands nearly 70 stories tall. This mast supports spans of 450 meters to the west and 175 meters to the east. The bridge’s asymmetric design showcases Hadid’s signature style, characterized by rounded edges and a fluid form that remains identifiable despite the structural constraints of a single supporting mast.
The artistic vision for the bridge draws inspiration from Taiwan’s renowned Cloud Gate Dance Theatre. During a ceremony celebrating the completion of this critical phase in September 2025, President Lai Ching-te expressed that Hadid envisioned the bridge as “a piece of dynamic and beautiful artwork that looks like it is dancing on the Tamsui River.” He lauded the project as “a work of art and a world-class project,” highlighting its significance as “Taiwan’s glory.”
Engineering Excellence and Environmental Consciousness
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the Danjiang Bridge represents a significant advancement in engineering. It will be Taiwan’s first bridge equipped with a damper system, improving its earthquake resistance to intensity 7, the highest level on the country’s seismic scale. The strategic placement of the single mast not only enhances structural performance but also allows for unobstructed sunset views from popular riverside locations, minimizing environmental impact on the estuary’s protected ecosystem.
With a budget of $766 million, the project addresses essential infrastructure needs by connecting the Tamsui and Bali districts and linking four major highways. Once operational, it is expected to considerably reduce congestion on the existing Guandu Bridge, thus improving transportation and connectivity across northern Taiwan.
The construction of the bridge posed numerous engineering challenges, demanding years of meticulous planning and execution. The recent installation of the final steel segment signifies the culmination of intensive efforts, with remaining tasks focused on final touches—including paving, lighting installation, cable inspections, and comprehensive load testing.
As Taiwan gears up for the May 2026 opening, the Danjiang Bridge is set to emerge as not only a vital transportation link but also a landmark symbolizing the island’s commitment to innovative design and engineering prowess. This structure will serve as a lasting tribute to Zaha Hadid’s visionary architecture, providing tangible benefits to millions of residents and visitors who will experience its remarkable fusion of form, function, and artistic expression spanning the Tamsui River.
