Siemens and Snowflake Join Forces to Enhance Industrial Data Management
Siemens AG and Snowflake have announced a strategic collaboration aimed at enhancing data management and artificial intelligence capabilities for industrial customers. This partnership enables manufacturers to integrate their operational technology (OT) data with information technology (IT) data, such as supply chain and financial information, facilitating improved operational efficiency and insights across their facilities.
By connecting the Siemens Industrial Edge with Snowflake’s AI Data Cloud, manufacturers can utilize plug-and-play Industrial Edge applications. This integration allows them to contextualize and transfer OT data into IT systems, establishing a robust data foundation essential for deeper insights and improved machine performance.
Bridging IT and OT for Enhanced Efficiency
Rainer Brehm, CEO of Factory Automation at Siemens, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, stating, “Siemens has deep expertise in how to bring OT and IT together on the shop floor, while Snowflake excels in managing and analyzing both large-scale OT and IT data.” He noted that the partnership enables customers to bridge the IT/OT divide, thereby scaling their digital transformation across machines, lines, and factories.
Christian Kleinerman, Executive Vice President of Product at Snowflake, highlighted the potential of this integration: “The ability to apply AI across both IT and OT data unlocks new possibilities for unparalleled quality improvement and radical performance optimization.” By leveraging AI-driven insights, manufacturers can achieve automation and enhance decision-making processes.
The collaboration also includes FFT, a prominent provider of complex manufacturing systems. FFT has integrated the Siemens Industrial Edge ecosystem to securely and efficiently transfer production data into the Snowflake AI Data Cloud using its DataBridge application. This implementation is already operational within FFT’s own facilities, showcasing its effectiveness in enhancing efficiency and data-driven optimization.
Transforming the Industrial Landscape
The Siemens and Snowflake partnership addresses common challenges faced by manufacturers, such as data silos and limited transparency. Siemens Industrial Edge facilitates the seamless integration of OT data from various sources, including programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and sensors. This data is pre-processed at the edge, allowing for real-time analytics and the execution of AI models in conjunction with production automation.
As a result, businesses can expect measurable improvements in operational efficiency, including enhanced machine performance, product quality, and reduced maintenance needs. This integration supports Siemens Digital Industries’ mission to accelerate digital and sustainability transformations across the entire value chain.
Siemens Digital Industries employs approximately 70,000 individuals globally and is part of Siemens AG, which generated revenue of €75.9 billion and net income of €9.0 billion in fiscal 2024, ending on September 30, 2024. The company focuses on creating technology that transforms everyday experiences, driving efficiency in industries, infrastructure, and healthcare.
Snowflake operates as a leading platform for the AI era, serving over 12,000 customers worldwide, including many of the largest enterprises. The collaboration with Siemens aims to harness the full potential of data, allowing businesses to innovate faster and derive greater value from their data assets.
