Serafini Productions Unveils ‘BrokenLore: UNFOLLOW’ – A Chilling Horror Experience
The Japanese studio Serafini Productions has launched its latest horror anthology, BrokenLore: UNFOLLOW, in early 2025. This game delves into complex themes of human desire and fear, immersing players in a world that challenges their mental resilience. Similar to the popular Dark Pictures series, each narrative arc offers a distinctive experience, allowing players to engage with the game at any point. While its predecessors, Low and Don’t Watch, provided brief encounters, Unfollow expands on this concept with more extensive gameplay and varied environments. The question remains: does this broadened scope enhance the overall experience, or does it detract from the franchise’s core sense of dread?
A Deep Dive into Anne’s Struggles
Players step into the shoes of Anne, a young woman haunted by her past. Childhood bullying and an abusive mother create a stifling home environment, leaving her with both emotional and physical scars. The only solace she finds is online, particularly through a streamer, which fosters a growing obsession with social media validation. As unresolved trauma resurfaces, Anne is forced to confront her nightmares, leading to a harrowing journey through her psyche.
Serafini Productions approaches these sensitive themes with care, crafting impactful moments that vividly portray the pain of abuse. Throughout the game, players encounter Anne’s memories through comic panels and notes scattered in the environment, offering insights into her struggles. While the game incorporates surreal elements to address these heavy topics, it may still be triggering for those with similar experiences.
Atmosphere and Gameplay Mechanics
Exploration plays a crucial role in Unfollow, requiring players to search for items to progress through the chilling narrative. Each chapter deepens the understanding of Anne’s character and the events that have shaped her life. A constant feeling of unease permeates as players navigate narrow corridors, with dim lighting casting long shadows that elevate the tension. In these moments, Unfollow excels by generating a palpable sense of dread.
Chase sequences add excitement to the exploration, demanding quick reflexes as players evade a terrifying beast in maze-like environments. These frantic moments heighten the stakes, but inconsistencies in stealth mechanics occasionally disrupt immersion. Players must sneak past threats, but the detection system often feels unreliable, detracting from the overall experience.
Puzzles in the game are straightforward, primarily requiring players to collect items or decipher environmental clues. This design encourages immersion as players discover more about Anne’s life through exploration. However, the necessity of backtracking to find key items can feel cumbersome, particularly as it does not fully utilize the inventory system.
The combat mechanics are where Unfollow struggles the most. Players can attack living mannequins with a mobile phone that delivers an electrical shock, but these encounters lack impact and excitement. Instead of feeling like a desperate struggle for survival, combat feels tedious, reducing the sense of threat and urgency during chase sequences.
Visually, the game presents a strong aesthetic with realistic environments that maintain a steady frame rate. Each location is infused with narrative fragments, enhancing the storytelling as players advance. Given Anne’s obsession with social media, a live counter tracks her actions, evolving into comment sections that emphasize the toxicity online, contributing to her mental decline. This creative integration of gameplay and narrative serves to enrich the overall experience.
The soundtrack amplifies the intensity, featuring a horror-inspired score that complements the chilling atmosphere. While some character models and animations may appear rough around the edges, they align with the B-movie horror aesthetic that the game embraces.
BrokenLore: UNFOLLOW serves as a poignant exploration of psychological scars and their lasting effects. The suffocating atmosphere allows players only brief moments of respite while solving puzzles. Although the game falters in its execution of stealth and combat segments, it remains a captivating experience. Despite its shortcomings, this short but impactful adventure leaves a lasting impression, echoing in the silence long after players step away.
