Samsung Unveils Galaxy Z TriFold with Older Snapdragon Chip

Samsung has officially launched the highly anticipated Galaxy Z TriFold in Korea, with plans for a US release in the first quarter of 2026. Priced at approximately $3,000, the device has generated discussion due to its use of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, rather than the more recent Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, which was unveiled in September 2023.

During a press event, Samsung’s Vice President of Mobile Experience Product Planning, Kang Min-seok, addressed inquiries regarding this choice. He explained that the decision was grounded in the company’s commitment to delivering a product of exceptional quality. “It was most important to prepare a perfect and highly finished product for the TriFold. We installed this chip with a focus on creating a highly finished product,” he stated.

The reasoning behind using the Snapdragon 8 Elite, which Samsung has been fine-tuning for over a year, lies in its perceived reliability. In contrast, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 has been in development for a significantly shorter period—estimated at around five to six months. Samsung believes this longer engagement with the earlier chip allows them to ensure a more polished performance for the Galaxy Z TriFold.

There are also financial factors at play. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is notably more expensive, costing an average of $280, compared to about $220 for the Snapdragon 8 Elite. While this price difference may seem modest, it becomes substantial given the anticipated production scale of the Galaxy Z TriFold. Additionally, the newer processor has been reported to face thermal issues, which Samsung is keen to avoid in their inaugural folding model.

The Galaxy Z TriFold is expected to retail in Korea for around $2,447 (approximately $500 more than the Galaxy Z Fold 7). Given this premium price tag, Samsung plans to limit production to around 100,000 units, according to recent estimates. This cautious approach reflects the company’s strategy to balance innovation with market viability, especially in a segment where consumer expectations are high.

As the launch approaches, many are watching to see how the Galaxy Z TriFold will perform in the competitive smartphone market, particularly given its unique folding design and high price point. With Samsung’s emphasis on quality and user experience, the success of this device could set a new standard in the foldable category.
