Samsung Sells Galaxy Z TriFold at Loss to Compete with Huawei

Samsung is reportedly selling its new Galaxy Z TriFold at a loss, aiming to capture market share from rival Huawei. The device is priced at approximately $2,440 in South Korea, which is about $440 more than the Galaxy Z Fold 7. However, a report from the Korean news outlet The Bell indicates that the production cost of the TriFold exceeds its retail price, suggesting Samsung is incurring significant losses on each unit sold.

The production cost encompasses only the components and labor involved in manufacturing the device, excluding research and development expenses. Given the extensive investment in R&D for the TriFold, this strategy raises questions about Samsung’s long-term financial viability for the product.

### Strategic Pricing Against Huawei

Samsung’s decision to price the Galaxy Z TriFold competitively may be driven by the need to increase its market presence. The device’s high price tag makes it less accessible, and a price point exceeding $3,000 could deter potential customers. In contrast, Huawei’s trifold device, launched last year, commanded prices as high as $5,000 for imported units, indicating a market for premium foldable devices.

Interestingly, since its launch in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the Galaxy Z TriFold is priced significantly higher, at around $3,260. This marks a 33% increase compared to its price in South Korea, suggesting that Samsung may be subsidizing the device in its home market to attract early adopters.

### Upcoming US Launch and CES 2024

Samsung plans to introduce the Galaxy Z TriFold in the United States in the first quarter of 2024. The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is scheduled for early January, and Samsung has a First Look event slated for January 4 at 19:00 PT. While this event typically does not showcase mobile products, the merging of mobile and home entertainment divisions could mean a formal announcement for the TriFold.

As Samsung navigates this challenging landscape, the focus on competitive pricing is a calculated risk aimed at bolstering its position against Huawei. The success of the Galaxy Z TriFold may hinge on consumer reception during its upcoming launch events and the broader market’s response to its innovative design and features.
