Retro Futurism Revived: JVC Pyramid TV Seeks LEGO Production
The iconic JVC 3100R Video Capsule, a hallmark of retro futurism from the 1970s, is seeking to make a comeback as a LEGO set. Designer DocBrickJones has crafted a detailed LEGO version of this unique television, known for its distinctive pyramid shape and space-age aesthetic. This project is currently featured on LEGO Ideas, a platform allowing fans to propose designs for potential production.
The original JVC 3100R was produced throughout the 1970s and combined a 6-inch black and white CRT screen with an AM/FM radio. Its transformation capability allowed it to function as a radio when collapsed into pyramid mode, while opening it revealed the television. The design drew inspiration from contemporary cultural trends, with its black and white color scheme mirroring the Saturn rockets and its pyramid form echoing the recently completed Transamerica Pyramid in San Francisco. Launched in 1972, the 3100R coincided with the height of the Apollo program, making it a sought-after item for collectors of space-themed memorabilia.
DocBrickJones’ LEGO rendition captures the essence of the original with impressive detail. The builder skillfully translates the analog curves and slopes of the JVC design into a medium that typically adheres to right angles. The pyramid’s angled base is crafted using slope bricks, maintaining the clean lines of the original. Features such as the recessed blue-tiled screen, speaker grills, and control dials add to the authenticity. A telescoping antenna and a brick-built power cable enhance the nostalgic feel of this modern interpretation.
The current lineup of LEGO Ideas has shown a trend towards nostalgic technology, featuring projects like the Polaroid OneStep camera and the Atari 2600. The JVC 3100R fits seamlessly into this pattern, representing a specific design philosophy from an era when optimism about technology was palpable. When people viewed the 3100R, they envisioned a brighter future, regardless of the reality of grainy UHF broadcasts.
LEGO Ideas operates as a democratic platform, encouraging fan participation in the design process. To move forward, projects need to gather 10,000 supporters within a designated timeframe. The JVC 3100R currently sits at 207 votes, requiring substantial support to reach the next milestone of 1,000 votes. This presents a significant opportunity for enthusiasts to rally behind a piece of design history. Voting is free and only requires a LEGO account, making it accessible to anyone interested in supporting this initiative.
Successful projects on LEGO Ideas can transition into official sets, with the original creators receiving royalties and recognition. Previous successes include the Saturn V rocket and the Medieval Blacksmith, demonstrating that niche designs can resonate with a broader audience. For those eager to see the JVC 3100R pyramid TV on store shelves, the voting link is available on the LEGO Ideas website.
As the world continues to embrace retro designs, the JVC 3100R deserves a second life in brick form, connecting a new generation with a piece of technological artistry from the past.
