Onyx Boox Note Air 5C Set for Major Software Update This Month
The latest-generation Onyx Boox Note Air 5C is poised to receive a significant software update, currently in beta testing. The anticipated firmware 4.2 is expected to address a variety of known issues, most of which are minor, and is scheduled for release in the coming weeks.
This update aims to enhance user experience across several areas, including system stability, note-taking features, and library functions. A comprehensive change log has been shared, detailing the improvements and fixes that users can expect.
Key Enhancements and Fixes
Among the updates, users will find an optimized NeoReader engine that promises better image smoothing and faster PDF loading. The new engine will also support improved handling of math formulas, making it a valuable tool for students and professionals alike. Additionally, the upgrade will address the occasional crashes when using the Lasso tool, enhancing the overall note-taking experience.
Significant new features include the addition of the EinWise Code functionality within the EinkWise Center, which is designed to improve users’ access to customization options. The update will also introduce an Auto-deselect option for the Eraser tool, alongside enhancements to the pressure sensitivity of the standard Pen brush.
Users will benefit from a revamped Calendar Memo feature, allowing the creation of events and reminders with timely alerts. This functionality supports synchronization with Google, Outlook, and CalDAV services, although full integration with Google Calendar will be available at a later date.
Minor Issues Still Present
Despite the positive changes, some minor issues remain. For instance, DPI settings from the EinkWise Code configurations will take effect only after restarting the application. Additionally, users reported that the Template Hub may not be accessible until the device is restarted or the server regions are switched post-update.
Other known issues include abnormal statistics related to library backup files, which will not impact the actual backup functionality. Users may also experience occasional visibility problems with Google Drive in the Cloud disk list after initial binding, although a simple device restart typically resolves this.
The update is designed not only to address these concerns but also to improve the overall user interface and experience. The note toolbar has been enhanced, allowing users to create a floating toolbar that can be docked anywhere on the screen edge.
With these updates, Michael Kozlowski, who has been covering audiobooks, e-books, and e-readers for nearly two decades, emphasizes the continuous evolution of the Onyx Boox devices. Based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Kozlowski points out that the commitment to user feedback has been integral to these enhancements.
As the release date approaches, users of the Onyx Boox Note Air 5C can look forward to a more streamlined and efficient digital reading and note-taking experience.
