OC Transpo Conducts Performance Testing for O-Train’s East Extension

OC Transpo will implement replacement bus services this weekend as it conducts performance testing for the O-Train’s east extension. The testing will take place on September 13 and 14, resulting in the suspension of Line 1 service between Tunney’s Pasture and Trim stations. This phase marks a critical step in the final construction of the east extension.
According to city staff, the current performance tests are aimed at ensuring that the newly integrated system can meet required service levels. During this testing period, 23 trains will operate under multiple test scenarios. The city emphasized that this testing is essential before the system can begin trial runs, which are anticipated to commence in the fall.
Progress of the East Extension
The east extension is nearing substantial completion, although specific dates for public access have not been finalized. Staff members expressed optimism that the extension could open to passengers by the end of 2025. The next phases will include a pre-trial running period lasting between five to ten days, followed by a 21-day trial running evaluation.
As part of the preparations, 27 out of 38 light rail vehicles (LRVs) for the Stage 2 fleet have been delivered and accepted by the city. Four additional vehicles are currently undergoing testing and approvals, while the remaining seven are either in production or awaiting production.
In addition to the east extension, rail installation has been completed for the west-end extension. The overhead catenary system, which will supply power to the trains, is expected to be finalized by the end of 2025.
Test trains have been operational on a section of track between the Corkstown yard maintenance and storage facility and Pinecrest Station. This ongoing work underscores the city’s commitment to enhancing its transit infrastructure and improving public transportation options for residents.
