BC Hydro has launched a new electric vehicle (EV) charging hub at Victoria’s Ogden Point, enhancing the EV infrastructure on Vancouver Island with the addition of 12 new charging ports. This facility is strategically located in the parking lot of the Ogden Point cruise ship terminal at 185 Dallas Rd.

The new hub features two 180-kilowatt chargers capable of providing up to 180 kilometres of range to an average electric vehicle in approximately 10 minutes. Adrian Dix, the Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions, emphasized that this initiative aligns with the province’s commitment to making cleaner transportation options more accessible and affordable for residents and visitors alike.

Boosting EV Infrastructure in British Columbia

“With over 800 BC Hydro charging ports now operational across British Columbia, we are establishing a robust public charging network that meets the increasing demand for electric vehicles and fosters economic growth in our province,” Dix stated. The new charging units not only provide rapid charging capabilities but also include dual charging or power-sharing options, allowing two customers to utilize the same charger simultaneously.

In addition to the fast chargers, the hub offers eight Level 2 chargers that accommodate varying lengths of stay for drivers. Grace Lore, Member of the Legislative Assembly for Victoria-Beacon Hill, remarked, “Victoria’s new hub at Ogden Point expands the city’s charging capacity and strengthens Vancouver Island’s role in B.C.’s EV charging network. These 12 new charging ports will support families, commuters, and visitors seeking affordable, reliable, zero-emission transportation options on Vancouver Island.”

Existing Facilities and Future Expansion

BC Hydro also operates an established EV fast-charging site in Victoria, located at 1425 Store Street, which provides two additional charging ports. With the new hub at Ogden Point, the combined total of charging ports in Victoria now stands at 14, marking a significant step forward in supporting the growing electric vehicle market in British Columbia.

As the demand for electric vehicles continues to rise, initiatives like this charging hub are critical in paving the way for a sustainable transportation future. The enhanced infrastructure not only facilitates the transition to electric mobility but also plays a vital role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to the province’s climate goals.
