The Montreal Canadiens have secured the future of their leadership by signing general manager Kent Hughes and hockey operations executive Jeff Gorton to multi-year contract extensions, as announced by the National Hockey League (NHL) club on October 14, 2025. In addition to the contract renewals, Gorton will take on a new role as president of hockey operations, reflecting the club’s confidence in its management team.

Both Hughes and Gorton were entering the final year of their contracts and have been instrumental in reviving the Canadiens’ fortunes. Under their guidance, the team returned to the playoffs last season after a three-year absence, surprising many with their performance. This turnaround has been fueled by a promising young core that includes captain Nick Suzuki, rookie sensation Ivan Demidov, and defenceman Lane Hutson, who recently signed an impressive eight-year contract extension valued at $70.8 million.

Jeff Gorton previously served as the general manager of the New York Rangers from 2015 until May 2021. He joined the Canadiens later that year as executive vice-president of hockey operations. Kent Hughes, a Montreal native, was appointed as general manager in January 2022, quickly making impactful decisions, including the hiring of the head coach.

As the Canadiens look to build on their recent success, they started the 2025-26 season with a record of 2-1-0, heading into their home opener against the Seattle Kraken. The team’s management and players are optimistic about continuing their upward trajectory this season.
