Mini has introduced two unique one-off vehicles in collaboration with the Australian company Deus Ex Machina at the IAA Mobility 2025 show in Munich, Germany. The cars made their debut on September 5, 2025, showcasing an innovative fusion of surf culture and high-performance automotive design. While neither model will be available for sale or production, they serve as an exciting representation of the blend between fashion and motorsport that both brands embody.

Introducing The Skeg and The Machina

The first model, named The Skeg, is an all-electric vehicle drawing inspiration from surfing. It features a striking yellow and silver exterior, emphasizing Mini’s commitment to electric mobility. With a power output of up to 258 horsepower (190 kW), The Skeg incorporates lightweight materials, including semi-transparent fibreglass panels that reduce the car’s weight by 15%.

Key design elements include wide fenders, an illuminated front grille, and a roof spoiler known as the Flex Tip Surf Spoiler, which is engineered to respond to airflow similarly to how a surfboard rides a wave. The interior reflects the pragmatic ethos of surf culture, featuring simple analogue controls and neoprene racing bucket seats that offer both comfort and water-repellent properties.

The second model, The Machina, celebrates Mini’s motorsport heritage with a design reminiscent of the brand’s racing legacy. Finished in a bold red, white, and black paint scheme, it has a power output of 231 horsepower (170 kW). This model boasts widened fenders and four additional headlights mounted on the hood, paying homage to Mini’s rally history.

The Machina’s rear diffuser is inspired by the John Cooper Works racers, enhancing airflow and stability, while the Can-Am-style rear spoiler adds a striking visual element. Inside, the racing theme continues with five-point harnesses and an exposed roll cage, reinforcing the car’s performance-oriented design.

Collaborative Spirit and Future Prospects

Both models prominently feature a large white “X” on their roofs, symbolizing the collaboration between Mini and Deus Ex Machina. Stefan Richmann, Head of Mini, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “Mini models have always been characterized by a blend of creative design and motorsport dynamics. Thanks to our collaboration with Deus Ex Machina, we are taking this philosophy to a new level and setting exciting new trends for fans and motorsport enthusiasts.”

While The Skeg and The Machina are not for sale, the collaboration has inspired a lifestyle collection that will be available for purchase. This collection aims to bring elements of the surf and motorsport cultures to a broader audience, appealing to enthusiasts of both worlds.
