Keep Your Vehicle’s Safety Sensors Clean for Winter Protection
Maintaining the cleanliness of your vehicle’s safety sensors is essential for optimal performance, particularly during winter months. With six key sensors commonly found in modern vehicles, regular maintenance is crucial to ensure they function effectively and keep drivers safe.
Understanding Vehicle Safety Sensors
Safety sensors play a vital role in the functionality of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), which are designed to enhance vehicle safety. These systems include features such as automatic emergency braking (AEB), blind spot monitoring, and collision detection, all of which rely on clean and operational sensors. Neglecting these components can lead to decreased safety and performance.
How to Clean Your Safety Sensors
1. **Backup Camera**
The backup camera lens is often protected by an anti-reflective coating. To avoid damage, experts recommend flushing the lens with water and wiping it with a soft cloth. If available, the rear windshield washer may feature a specialized nozzle to assist in this cleaning process. For added protection, consider applying a hydrophobic coating to maintain clarity between cleanings.
2. **Bumper Sensors**
Located within the vehicle’s bumpers, parking assistant sensors require regular cleaning. Use a soft cloth and a mixture of water with car wash detergent to remove dirt and grime effectively.
3. **Blind Spot Monitor**
Radar sensors situated in the rear body panels detect obstacles in your vicinity. Ensure these sensors are free from dirt, snow, or salt residue, which can interfere with their operation.
4. **Forward Collision and Lane Departure Sensors**
These sensors are located behind the top center of the windshield. It is important to keep this area clean. Notably, Subaru owner’s manuals advise against applying hydrophobic treatments to this specific windshield section.
5. **360 Degree Camera**
Clean the lenses of the 360-degree cameras following the same procedure used for the backup camera. This ensures that all angles are covered for maximum safety.
6. **Grille Sensors**
Many vehicles place radar sensors behind the front grille. Keeping this area clear of snow and ice is critical, as these conditions can obstruct sensor functionality.
Proper upkeep of these sensors not only ensures your vehicle is recognized accurately by other systems but also enhances your safety on the road. According to retired constable Tim Schewe, who has extensive experience in traffic law enforcement, keeping these components clean is vital. He emphasizes, “ADAS systems are there to protect you. Don’t turn them off!”
