Indie Game ‘Hermit and Pig’ Set for January 2026 Release

Indie developer Heavy Lunch Studio has announced that their upcoming turn-based adventure role-playing game, Hermit and Pig, will launch on January 22, 2026. The announcement was made during the recent Six One Indie Showcase, where a new trailer provided a first glimpse into the vibrant, mushroom-filled world inhabited by a reclusive hermit and his truffle-hunting pig. The game is expected to attract fans of quirky adventures and retro pixel art.

A Unique Adventure Awaits Players

Hermit and Pig offers a fresh take on the traditional adventure RPG genre. While it draws inspiration from classics such as Earthbound, it introduces innovative mechanics that set it apart. Combat is centered around a key-combo system reminiscent of fighting games like Street Fighter, combined with the playful mechanics found in Paper Mario. This design choice emphasizes skill development rather than repetitive grinding, making battles more engaging.

Social interactions also play a crucial role in the game. Players will navigate the hermit’s social anxiety through humorous and cringe-inducing conversations with non-playable characters (NPCs). These interactions are designed as “conversation battles,” where players must navigate dialogue that can inflict real damage in unexpected ways.

Since its initial reveal at the Future of Play Direct in 2023, Hermit and Pig has garnered attention through various gaming events, including the Future Games Show, Day of the Devs, The Mix, Wholesome Games, EGX, Dreamhack, and Magfest. The storyline kicks off when a girl from a nearby town seeks help from the hermit and his pig after a local factory replaces its workers with mysterious new personnel. The duo embarks on a quest to discover a legendary mushroom that could save the town from impending hunger, while competing parties may also be after the same prize.
