Google has launched an exclusive initiative that allows 15 of its most dedicated Pixel Superfans to test unreleased Pixel phones. This unique opportunity, referred to as the “Pixel Trusted Tester” program, aims to gather feedback directly from enthusiastic users. The announcement of the program generated considerable interest, with details on the selection process now revealed.

Selection Process for Pixel Trusted Testers

According to information obtained by The Verge, the selection process for the Pixel Trusted Testers involved a contest specifically for members of the Pixel Superfans community. Interested participants were required to answer a series of questions designed to gauge their experience with Pixel devices and their insights into potential improvements. The questions included:

1. “How many Pixel devices have you ever owned?”
2. “As a Pixel Superfan, please give us feedback on your current Pixel device. What would you improve and why?”
3. “If you had a magic wand, what feature would you add to your device and why?”

A panel of Google judges evaluated the responses and selected those they found most compelling. Successful candidates will participate in a second round of inquiries before being officially designated as Pixel Trusted Testers.

Responsibilities of Selected Testers

Winners of the program will have specific responsibilities, including signing a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) and using a special protective case on the unreleased devices to ensure confidentiality. They must also return the devices to Google within a stipulated period of seven years. Additionally, participants are expected to engage actively in surveys and assist in identifying software bugs during the testing phase.

The application window closed on October 17, 2023, prior to the public announcement, which left many interested individuals unable to submit their entries. Despite this, Google has hinted at the possibility of a similar program next year, labeling it as “Trusted Tester 2025”. This suggests that the tech giant may continue to expand its engagement with dedicated users in the coming years, contingent upon the success of the current initiative.

While the contest for this year is now closed, prospective candidates can still join the Pixel Superfans community. Membership is currently open to residents of the United States, provided they are not members of the press. Those interested in future testing opportunities may benefit from becoming part of this enthusiastic group.
