BC Ferries is examining the potential introduction of passenger-only vessels as part of its long-term vision for the future. The company’s newly released 25-year plan suggests that ferries designed exclusively for passengers could enhance travel efficiency, particularly for those without vehicles. While no immediate plans have been set, the initiative reflects a growing trend towards optimizing ferry services in British Columbia.

Reducing Travel Times and Operating Costs

According to the company, the use of passenger-only ferries could significantly reduce travel times for individuals traveling without cars, while smaller vessels would lead to lower operating costs. Currently, passenger-only services are already operational in the region, such as those provided by Hullo Ferries, which connects Vancouver and Nanaimo.

CIRQL Ferries is another player in this sector, planning to introduce passenger-only ferries to British Columbia in 2027. The CEO of CIRQL Ferries, Callum Campbell, emphasized the importance of adapting to changing demographics. He explained, “It’s a really important system in B.C., kind of introduced in the 1960s, and it was really focused on cars. When everyone had a car, they built these ferry terminals out in far-flung locations where people would drive to and then a sort of short ferry crossing between those car ferry terminals. But demographics have changed, we’re many decades on from that now, and really we want to prioritize moving people.”

BC Ferries’ Focus on Stability and Reliability

While BC Ferries has not committed to a specific plan regarding passenger-only services, the organization acknowledges the concept as one of several potential future initiatives. In a statement, the company asserted that “this concept is a long-term consideration and there are no plans in the near term.” The current priority remains stabilizing the ferry system, ensuring reliable service for customers, and making necessary investments to renew vessels and terminals.

As British Columbia continues to evolve, the exploration of new ferry service models reflects a broader shift in transportation needs. With a focus on efficient travel options for an increasingly diverse population, BC Ferries is poised to consider innovative solutions that could enhance connectivity across the region.
