Barrie is set to enhance its public transportation infrastructure with the opening of the new Allandale Transit Terminal on September 21, 2024. This centralized transit hub will allow commuters to access major transit services from a single location, streamlining travel for residents and visitors alike.

Located at 20 Essa Road, the Allandale Transit Terminal is adjacent to the Allandale Waterfront GO Station and the historic Allandale Station building. Once operational, it will provide direct connections to Barrie Transit, GO Trains and Buses, the County of Simcoe LINX, and Ontario Northland. This connectivity broadens access to various regions, including Simcoe County, the Greater Toronto Area, and Northern Ontario.

Construction on the terminal began in February 2024, with an official groundbreaking taking place at the end of May. The city confirmed the terminal’s opening date earlier this month, generating excitement among local residents and commuters. An official grand opening event is scheduled for the week following the terminal’s launch, where city officials will share further details about its services and features.

In conjunction with the terminal’s opening, Barrie Transit Route 8 will be rerouted to service the new terminal more directly. The route will also introduce new stops along Lakeshore Drive, Springdale Drive, and Cundles Road East. This change aims to enhance accessibility for commuters traveling to and from the terminal.

As part of a broader transit strategy, the existing downtown transit terminal located at 24 Maple Avenue is scheduled to close on September 28, 2024. Plans for the site include its transformation into a campus for Lakehead University’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) hub, which is expected to become operational by the fall of 2026.

The city has also committed to preserving the old Allandale Station building, ensuring it remains a historic site for future generations. With the launch of the Allandale Transit Terminal, Barrie is poised to improve public transport efficiency, benefiting the community and contributing to regional connectivity.
