Apple’s Foldable iPhone Promises to Eliminate Display Crease
Apple is poised to unveil a revolutionary foldable iPhone that may address a significant issue plaguing its competitors: the visible crease in foldable displays. This development has emerged from leaked renders by tech analyst Jon Prosser, who suggests that Apple’s foldable iPhone is set to be launched alongside the iPhone 18 series in Fall 2026. The anticipated price range for this innovative device lies between $2,000 and $2,500.
Currently, all foldable phones on the market, including the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold and Google’s Pixel Fold, feature a crease that becomes noticeable under certain lighting conditions. This crease has become a standard challenge in the industry, a reminder of the ongoing engineering hurdles in foldable display technology. Despite multiple iterations, manufacturers like Samsung have struggled to eliminate this crease, which is a result of the materials used in flexible displays.
Understanding the crease’s origins requires insight into the flexible OLED panel’s construction. Traditional rigid OLEDs use glass substrates, ensuring a seamless surface. In contrast, foldable displays utilize plastic substrates, which can flex but also accumulate stress over time, leading to visible wear. Each fold stresses the material differently, resulting in permanent deformation and ultimately the crease that users experience with current devices.
According to Prosser, Apple’s approach involves two key innovations to combat this problem. The first is a metal dispersion plate positioned beneath the display. This plate aims to distribute bending pressure across a broader area, rather than concentrating it at a single point. Such a design could fundamentally change how forces are managed within a foldable display, similar to principles used in structural engineering.
The second innovation is a liquid metal hinge mechanism. Apple has explored Liquidmetal, a zirconium-based alloy, which can be molded into precise geometries, potentially enhancing the hinge’s performance. This material could offer improved durability and a smoother operating mechanism compared to traditional hinge designs.
The dimensions of the device, as indicated by the leaks, suggest a thickness of 9mm when closed, splitting to approximately 4.5mm per half. This would place the unfolded thickness at just 4.5mm, making it only slightly thicker than current flagship iPhones like the iPhone 15 Pro, which measures 8.25mm. These specifications indicate a focus on miniaturization and efficient thermal management.
Despite the promising details, the transition from concept to production raises concerns. Renders illustrate a flawless design, but real-world production will face various challenges, including material durability under repeated use and manufacturing scalability. The true test of whether Apple has resolved the crease issue will only be determined when production units undergo rigorous testing.
If Apple successfully eliminates the crease, the implications could extend beyond smartphones, impacting various devices utilizing flexible displays. This breakthrough could lead to advancements in foldable tablets, laptops, and other electronic formats. However, achieving this at the manufacturing scale required for iPhones—where Apple ships millions of units annually—poses another significant challenge.
Pricing for the foldable iPhone positions it above the Galaxy Z Fold 6, which starts at $1,899. This pricing strategy reflects Apple’s cautious approach to entering a new product category, indicating they are testing the market’s willingness to pay for this innovation. The limited color options of black and white suggest a controlled launch, allowing Apple to manage supply while gauging demand at the high end of the market.
The anticipated launch in Fall 2026 allows Apple nearly two years to refine the manufacturing process, build inventory, and develop the software necessary to maximize the potential of a foldable device. Adjustments to the operating system and app frameworks will be crucial to leveraging the larger internal display effectively.
While the potential of a crease-free foldable iPhone excites consumers, the reality of its performance remains speculative until verified by independent reviews. The upcoming months will reveal whether Apple’s engineering prowess can indeed transform the foldable smartphone landscape, making the device a compelling option in a competitive market.
