Apple Watch Ultra 3 Review: A Leap in Connectivity and Design
The newly launched Apple Watch Ultra 3 has made headlines with its advanced connectivity features and enhanced design. Released in September 2023, this latest model promises to keep users connected even in remote locations, thanks to its innovative satellite communication capabilities. The watch also boasts a brighter display and improved battery life, catering to fitness enthusiasts and those who require reliable technology during outdoor activities.
One of the most notable features of the Ultra 3 is its ability to connect directly to satellites, allowing users to send messages or call emergency services without cellular coverage. While this futuristic capability is impressive, users should note that texting and location sharing require an additional fee from cellular carriers, typically around $15 in Canada. Fortunately, emergency calls remain free, a crucial aspect for those venturing into the wilderness.
The Ultra 3 features a screen with an impressive peak brightness of 3,000 nits, making it easier to read in various lighting conditions. Its display refreshes at 1Hz per second, which provides accurate second-hand movements on the Always-on display (AOD). This improvement brings the Ultra 3 in line with the previous Series 10 model while offering the largest display among the Apple Watch lineup.
Battery life has also seen a significant enhancement, with Apple claiming up to 42 hours of usage on a single charge. Compared to its predecessor, the Ultra 1, the Ultra 3 outlasts it by approximately 12 hours. Users can expect consistent performance, as all three generations of the Ultra maintain a 72-hour rating in low-power mode. Additionally, charging time has improved, allowing the Ultra 3 to recharge roughly 15 minutes faster than previous models.
Beyond connectivity and battery enhancements, the Ultra 3 supports the latest version of watchOS, including features like the Sleep Score. This new tool evaluates sleep quality by assessing depth, consistency of bedtime, and duration, making the data easier to interpret. Users can also benefit from a new feature called Workout Buddy, which provides motivational updates during workouts, enhancing the overall fitness experience.
Apple has also made strides in manufacturing efficiency. The watch’s titanium shell is now produced using a new 3D printing technique, reducing waste and production time. This method contributes to a smaller and lighter design compared to earlier models, further improving user comfort.
While the Ultra 3 is equipped with 5G support, Canadian carriers currently do not offer 5G plans for smartwatches. Users will have to rely on existing Wi-Fi capabilities, which remain limited to Wi-Fi 4 technology. Although this does not significantly impact day-to-day use, faster download speeds for music and apps would enhance the overall experience.
The Apple Watch Ultra 3 is priced at $1,099 in Canada, making it a premium choice for those seeking a stylish and highly functional smartwatch. The Alpine and Trail loops are recommended for their comfort, while the Ocean band offers added security for swimmers. The watch is tailored for athletes and outdoor enthusiasts, with features designed to support extended workouts and outdoor adventures.
In summary, the Apple Watch Ultra 3 combines cutting-edge technology with a sleek design, making it an appealing option for users who demand reliability and performance. Its satellite connectivity, improved battery life, and new features position it as a valuable tool for both fitness enthusiasts and those who spend time in remote locations.
