Amazon Confirms Dual-OS Strategy with Fire OS and Vega OS
Amazon has confirmed that its operating system strategy will continue to include both Fire OS and the newly developed Vega OS, aimed at enhancing security and user experience. This announcement follows the launch of the Fire TV Stick 4K Select, which debuted with the Vega OS, stirring speculation about a potential phase-out of Fire OS.
Clarification on Operating Systems
In a statement to Android Authority, Amazon clarified that Vega OS is intended to “expand — not replace —” its existing OS framework. This approach underscores Amazon’s commitment to maintaining its Android-based Fire OS while integrating Vega OS for improved device performance and security.
The new Vega OS is designed to provide flexibility and create premium experiences across a range of devices, particularly those with limited memory capacities. It is also expected to support larger platforms that run artificial intelligence applications, such as Alexa+.
Addressing Privacy and Security Concerns
Amazon’s dual-OS strategy comes at a time when the company is addressing significant privacy and illegal streaming issues associated with its current Fire OS. According to data from YouGov Sport, approximately 4.7 million adults in the UK have engaged in illegal streaming over the past six months, utilizing Fire TV sticks and other IPTV devices. Many of these streams involved sideloaded apps or unauthorized installations, which are more prevalent due to the open nature of Fire OS.
In response, Amazon is actively working to identify and block applications that facilitate the streaming of pirated content. The rollout of these security measures has already begun in Germany and France and is expected to expand globally in the coming weeks.
By implementing the Linux-based Vega OS, Amazon aims to mitigate the risks associated with sideloading, reinforcing security measures from the outset. Both operating systems will coexist, and it is anticipated that these enhanced protections will eventually extend to older Amazon devices, providing a more secure environment for users.
Amazon’s dual-OS strategy marks a significant step in its efforts to diversify its operating system capabilities. As the company navigates the challenges posed by illegal streaming and privacy concerns, the integration of Vega OS alongside Fire OS could enhance user trust and improve the overall experience across its devices.
