2025 Volkswagen Tiguan Unveiled: A Blend of Luxury and Performance

The all-new 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan has officially launched, marking its entry into the compact SUV market with a significant redesign. This third-generation model aims to elevate the Tiguan’s presence alongside popular competitors such as the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V, offering a more luxurious experience without the premium price tag.
Volkswagen has made notable improvements to the Tiguan, shedding approximately 170 pounds from its predecessor. This weight reduction, combined with a more powerful 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine generating 201 horsepower—an increase of 17 horsepower from the 2024 model—contributes to a more agile driving experience. Torque measures at 221 lb-ft, with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive as standard. Later in the year, a more powerful Highline trim will be introduced, boasting 258 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.
Despite these enhancements, the Tiguan remains a gasoline-only option, lacking hybrid or plug-in hybrid variants. This places it among a small group of vehicles in the compact crossover segment that do not offer alternative propulsion systems, a decision that may impact its competitiveness as the market shifts towards electrification.
Driving Experience and Performance
The driving dynamics of the 2025 Tiguan have been received positively, with reviewers noting its improved athleticism and responsiveness. The combination of reduced weight and increased power translates to quicker acceleration, making it one of the top contenders in its class for drive feel. While it may not be classified as fast, the Tiguan is quick off the line, allowing for effortless highway merging with minimal turbo lag.
The steering feel is well-balanced, providing ease of maneuverability in urban settings while also accommodating a sportier driving experience through a dedicated Sport mode. The vehicle handles corners with stability, and although some engine noise may seep into the cabin at higher RPMs, this characteristic is not unique to the Tiguan.
Fuel efficiency rates at a combined 9.3 L/100 km, slightly better than the previous model’s 9.4 L/100 km, offering modest savings alongside the performance boost.
Interior Features and Design
One of the most significant changes in the 2025 Tiguan is its interior, which has been upgraded to reflect a more luxurious aesthetic. The previous option for a third row has been eliminated, allowing for a more spacious and upscale design. The cabin features a long, centralized gear selector that has been replaced by a twisting stalk on the steering column, enhancing the modern feel.
The standard infotainment system now includes a 12.9-inch high-resolution display, with the top-trim model featuring a larger 15-inch screen. This system is responsive and visually appealing, although it integrates climate control functions into the touchscreen, which some drivers may find less user-friendly. A physical volume dial has been added, providing a tactile option for adjusting audio levels.
The interior’s minimalistic design is complemented by premium materials, including quilted leather seats and walnut wood trim in higher trims. Standard features across all models include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated front seats, and advanced safety systems such as automatic emergency braking and lane assist.
Pricing for the 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan in Canada starts at $36,495 for the entry-level Trendline, with the Comfortline priced at $39,995 and the Black Edition at $43,495. The top-tier Highline R-Line, featuring the upcoming higher-output engine, is available for $47,495. This pricing positions the Tiguan competitively within the compact SUV segment, particularly against rivals like the Mazda CX-5 and CX-50.
As Volkswagen aims to increase sales with the 2025 Tiguan, the absence of hybrid options may pose challenges, particularly as competitors expand their eco-friendly offerings. Nevertheless, the new Tiguan’s blend of luxury, performance, and advanced technology sets it apart in a crowded market, appealing to consumers seeking a premium experience at a reasonable cost.
