Why Concerns Over X’s Safety Are Driving Users Away
The social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, has faced intense scrutiny following reports of rising misogyny and the dissemination of harmful content. Earlier this month, the chatbot Grok, integrated into X, was linked to the creation of an alarming number of sexualized images, including an estimated three million images of sexual abuse involving women and children, according to the Center for Countering Digital Hate. This incident raises questions about the platform’s viability and safety for its users.
Calls for users to abandon X have grown louder, especially in light of its troubling recent history. For many, the emergence of AI-generated child sexual abuse images might seem like a tipping point. Yet, despite the ongoing issues of harassment and misogyny that have plagued the platform for years, significant numbers of users, including public figures and politicians, remain active on it.
In an interview about the implications of Grok’s actions for public discourse, Marilou McPhedran, a senator from Manitoba, highlighted the financial incentives behind online abuse, describing it as “highly profitable misogyny.” Despite her acknowledgment of the dangers, she continues to use X, citing its role as a crucial communication tool. “As odious as it often is to even go on X, I think it remains a primary communication tool,” McPhedran stated, emphasizing her commitment to transparency and accountability in her interactions online.
Yet, the question arises: who exactly continues to use X? With the platform’s environment increasingly dominated by bots and negative content, the rationale for remaining on it seems tenuous. Observers argue that the platform, under the ownership of Elon Musk, has deteriorated to a state where its value is questionable. Advocates for digital safety suggest that the decision to leave should be straightforward.
The cultural context is also significant. As we move into 2026, nostalgia for previous years, such as 2016, is evident on various social media platforms. Many users fondly remember what they consider a simpler time, though the realities of that era were far more complex. The optimism of the Obama years and the pre-pandemic environment masked underlying issues, including rampant online harassment that many women faced, particularly on platforms like Twitter.
Reflecting on the past, it is clear that while X was once seen as a vibrant town square for exchanging ideas, its current state is characterized by toxicity. The ideal of a lively space for cultural conversation has been overshadowed by the prevalence of abuse and misinformation.
The situation has led some to reconsider their attachment to the platform. Many users have begun to question the necessity of being present on X, particularly in fields like politics and journalism, where the platform was once deemed indispensable. The appeal of real-time interactions during events has diminished, as has the tolerance for the harassment that often accompanies it.
As public figures and everyday users alike grapple with the implications of their digital presence, the future of X remains uncertain. Those who have chosen to distance themselves from the platform, including many journalists, report a sense of relief and freedom. The time may be ripe for others to reevaluate their involvement with X and consider its impact on their well-being.
In conclusion, the recent controversies surrounding X underscore a growing urgency for users to reassess their engagement with the platform. As discussions about digital safety and accountability continue, the calls for change may lead to a significant shift in how social media is used and perceived in the coming years.
