Victoria Launches Advanced Robotic Surgery Program for Patients
A new robotic surgery program has been launched in Victoria, Canada, significantly enhancing patient care and recovery options. This initiative is the result of a successful fundraising effort led by the Victoria Hospital Foundation, which raised $17 million to introduce the da Vinci surgical robot at the Royal Jubilee Hospital. The first surgery using this advanced technology took place on February 3, 2023.
Dr. Michael J Metcalfe, a urologist involved in the program, expressed his relief at finally providing patients with safer surgical options. Previously, patients faced a difficult choice: undergo riskier surgery locally or travel to locations like Vancouver or the United States for better technology. Metcalfe, who has a background in robotic surgery, felt compelled to improve local offerings after witnessing the benefits of robotic techniques during his training at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
Under Metcalfe’s leadership, the Victoria Hospital Foundation has initiated a second fundraising phase aimed at raising an additional $21 million. This funding will support the acquisition of two new surgical robots for Victoria General Hospital, including another da Vinci and a Mazor X neuro-robot designed to assist in brain and spine surgeries.
The impact of these advancements is already being felt in the community. For instance, Gerald Kersten, an orthodontist diagnosed with prostate cancer, benefitted from robotic surgery that allowed for a less invasive procedure. Due to a rare blood-clotting disorder, traditional surgery posed significant risks for Kersten. He described the da Vinci-assisted surgery as a game-changer, noting that the use of “tiny little half-inch stab wounds” instead of larger incisions made the procedure considerably safer.
Kersten’s recovery time after surgery was remarkably swift. He returned to work within ten days and was cycling again just two weeks after the operation. “It’s amazing because in most cases, it would have been six to eight weeks before I could have gone back to work,” he stated. His experience illustrates the growing potential of robotic surgery, especially as cancer cases are projected to increase in British Columbia. According to BC Cancer, the demand for cancer care in the province is expected to rise by 60 percent over the next decade.
The Victoria Hospital Foundation’s fundraising efforts have been bolstered by a substantial matching donation of $7.5 million from a local philanthropist, marking the largest gift in the foundation’s history. This support reflects a strong community commitment to advancing healthcare in the region.
With the introduction of robotic surgery, Victoria is positioning itself as a leader in medical innovation, making advanced surgical options more accessible to its residents. The da Vinci surgical robot will not only enhance existing procedures but also expand the range of minimally invasive surgeries available in gynecology, pediatrics, and general surgery.
As the initiative progresses, Dr. Metcalfe remains optimistic about the future of robotic surgery in Victoria. “Patients are getting back to their lives quicker, better,” he remarked, highlighting the positive implications of this technology for the healthcare system and the community.
