UVic Graduate Honored for Leading 3D Bioprinting in Cancer Research
A graduate from the University of Victoria (UVic) has received recognition for her innovative work in cancer drug testing through advanced 3D bioprinting technology. Karolina Valente, who founded the Victoria-based biotech firm VoxCell BioInnovation, is being awarded the Emerging Alumni Award as part of UVic’s 2026 Distinguished Alumni Awards. Her commitment to cancer research was deeply influenced by her mother’s struggle with breast cancer.
Innovative Approaches to Drug Testing
Valente, serving as both the chief executive officer and chief scientific officer at VoxCell, established the company shortly after earning her PhD at UVic. VoxCell specializes in developing 3D bioprinted human tissue models designed to enhance drug testing accuracy. This technology aims to replace traditional animal testing methods, offering more relevant insights for human health and accelerating the delivery of safer cancer treatments.
Under Valente’s guidance, VoxCell has successfully secured millions in funding, filed numerous patents, and expanded its operations internationally, earning significant recognition within the oncology and bioprinting sectors. Her leadership style emphasizes the importance of diversity, fostering a team that combines various experiences and skills to strengthen scientific research.
A Legacy of Education and Mentorship
Valente maintains strong ties to UVic, actively participating as an educator and mentor. She believes that her academic background has profoundly influenced her professional journey, stating, “My training at UVic gave me a strong foundation in how to think critically, lead with intention, and support people as they grow.” These principles guide her work today and reflect her commitment to fostering the next generation of scientists.
She is among 11 distinguished recipients of UVic’s ɬíɬəl ʔa kws ƛ̓kwəxnəq Skwukwəlstəŋəƛ̓ | SIÁMĆEȽ | Distinguished Alumni Awards for 2026. Other honorees include Kyle Empringham, co-founder of The Starfish Canada, recognized for his impactful work in climate education, and William Yoachim, a leader from the Snuneymuxw First Nation, acknowledged for his efforts in creating a nationally recognized child welfare model rooted in Coast Salish traditions.
The awards celebrate the achievements of UVic graduates across multiple categories, including Presidents’ Alumni Awards, Emerging Alumni Awards, and Indigenous Community Alumni Awards.
This recognition highlights the vital role of innovation and leadership in the ongoing pursuit of advancements in healthcare and education. Valente’s achievements exemplify the significant impact that dedicated individuals can have on their communities and beyond.
