Trump Uses AI Imagery to Shape Narrative and Attack Rivals

Donald Trump has embraced artificial intelligence to create hyper-realistic imagery that glorifies himself while disparaging his political opponents. Since starting his second term, Trump has utilized AI-generated content as a primary communications tool on his Truth Social platform, marking a significant shift in how a sitting president engages with the public.

The former president has been known for his controversial tactics, and his recent AI-driven posts exemplify a blend of self-promotion and direct assaults on rivals. For instance, last month, Trump shared a fabricated video depicting himself as “King Trump,” flying a fighter jet and mocking protesters during nationwide “No Kings” demonstrations against his leadership style. Accompanied by Kenny Loggins’s “Danger Zone,” the post showcased a surreal portrayal of Trump amid a political storm.

AI Imagery’s Role in Political Strategy

Trump’s administration has been described as the first to employ AI-generated visuals in such a pronounced manner. The White House has released various AI-made images, including one where Trump is depicted as Superman, labeled “THE SYMBOL OF HOPE.” This approach has raised concerns about the potential for deception among social media users, some of whom have questioned the authenticity of these visuals. The origins of the imagery remain unclear, as the White House has not provided comments on the matter.

Nora Benavidez, senior counsel at the advocacy group Free Press, emphasized the troubling implications of Trump’s AI usage. She stated, “Trump peddles disinformation on and offline to boost his own image, attack his adversaries and control public discourse.” The unregulated nature of generative AI, according to Benavidez, allows Trump to capture attention while distorting reality.

In September 2023, Trump sparked outrage with another AI-generated video where he promised Americans access to mythical “MedBed” hospitals. This concept, rooted in debunked conspiracy theories, portrayed a futuristic healthcare solution that could cure various illnesses. The clip, styled as a Fox News segment, featured Trump’s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, promoting the fictitious initiative before it was deleted without explanation.

Political Trolling and Reactions

Trump has often utilized provocative AI posts to engage his conservative base, particularly targeting his rivals. In July, he shared an AI video of former president Barack Obama being arrested, which drew criticism for its inflammatory content. Another post featured House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who is Black, depicted with exaggerated features, which Jeffries condemned as racist.

Joshua Tucker, co-director of the New York University Center for Social Media and Politics, noted the implications of Trump’s approach. He remarked, “While it would be desirable for the president of the United States to stay above the fray, Trump has repeatedly demonstrated that he sees his time in office as a non-stop political campaign.” Tucker characterized the behavior as “campaigning through trolling” rather than an attempt to propagate false beliefs about the images’ reality.

In a parallel move, California Governor Gavin Newsom recently posted an AI-generated video mocking Republicans following significant electoral victories for Democrats. The clip featured wrestlers with superimposed faces of Democratic leaders triumphing over their Republican opponents, further highlighting how AI imagery is becoming a tool for political commentary.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, Trump’s innovative yet controversial use of AI raises questions about the future of public discourse and the role of technology in shaping political narratives. With the potential for misinformation to proliferate, the implications of this trend will be closely monitored by observers across the spectrum.
