Test Your Skills with Challenging Gerrymandering Puzzles
Earlier today, a set of three gerrymandering logic puzzles was released, inviting enthusiasts to test their skills in electoral map design. The goal of each puzzle is to identify the unique configuration where the minority colour prevails in the most regions. A region is defined as a contiguous block of cells connected either horizontally or vertically, ensuring that diagonal connections do not count.
Brady Forrest, known as Deckard, is the creator of these puzzles. He has provided an opportunity for both offline and online engagement, with print versions available for those who prefer traditional solving methods. To play digitally, interactive links accompany each puzzle, catering to a range of preferences.
Puzzle Breakdown and Objectives
The first puzzle is categorized as easy, requiring participants to divide the grid into five regions, each containing five cells. In this scenario, the minority colour, purple, must secure the majority of regions. The medium difficulty puzzle escalates the challenge, asking solvers to partition the grid into five regions of ten cells each without allowing ties. In this case, purple must again dominate the regions.
The hardest puzzle involves a division into seven regions of seven cells, with blue as the minority colour. As with the previous challenges, blue must win the majority of regions, and ties are not permitted for the top position in any region.
Solutions to these puzzles are provided at the end of the article, encouraging participants to compare their results. The interactive versions have been developed by Starwort, enhancing accessibility for a wider audience.
Engaging with the Community
Since 2015, Brady Forrest has been sharing a puzzle every other Monday, fostering a community of puzzle enthusiasts. He expresses a continuous interest in discovering new and exciting puzzles, inviting suggestions from the public via email.
In related news, Forrest recently shared an interesting fact from his upcoming book, Football School Facts. The book features Gerry Taggart, a former Premier League player, as one of only four individuals sent off during their birthday matches. This intriguing tidbit is among many in the publication, co-authored with Ben Lyttleton, aimed at readers aged seven to one hundred seven. Football School Facts is a full-colour, hardback edition that serves as an excellent gift option and is available for purchase at the Guardian Bookshop.
As interest in gerrymandering puzzles grows, this initiative by Brady Forrest not only engages the public but also highlights the strategic implications of electoral map design in a playful manner.
