Swearing Can Enhance Physical Strength, New Research Reveals
Swearing during physical exertion may significantly enhance performance, according to recent research published by the American Psychological Association. A study conducted at Keele University in the UK discovered that individuals who use expletives while engaging in challenging physical tasks can push themselves harder and endure longer.
The research indicates that swearing appears to lower inhibitions, boost confidence, and facilitate a focused mental state, often referred to as “flow.” Lead researcher Richard Stephens explains that individuals often hold back their true potential due to social norms or self-doubt. He asserts that swearing can help break these barriers, allowing individuals to feel more focused and confident.
Understanding the Psychological Mechanism
Previous studies have demonstrated a correlation between swearing and improved performance in physically demanding situations. This includes tasks such as keeping a hand submerged in ice water or sustaining body weight during chair push-up exercises. The research team aimed to explore how swearing aids performance and to identify the underlying psychological mechanisms.
The hypothesis was that swearing might promote a more disinhibited mental state. In this state, individuals may feel less constrained by social expectations and internal hesitations, enabling them to exert greater effort in physical tasks.
To investigate this theory, the researchers conducted two experiments involving a total of 192 participants. Each participant completed a chair push-up task while repeating either a self-chosen swear word or a neutral word every two seconds. Following the tasks, participants responded to surveys assessing their mental state during the exercise.
Examining Performance Outcomes
The results aligned with previous findings, demonstrating that those who swore during the chair push-ups were able to maintain their body weight for significantly longer periods compared to those who used neutral words. The researchers combined data from both experiments with results from earlier studies, concluding that the performance advantage was associated with heightened levels of psychological flow, reduced distraction, and increased self-confidence—key aspects of a disinhibited state.
Stephens noted, “Swearing is literally a calorie neutral, drug free, low-cost, readily available tool at our disposal for when we need a boost in performance.” This accessibility makes swearing a practical option for individuals seeking to enhance their physical capabilities.
The research team plans to further explore whether the positive effects of swearing extend beyond physical challenges. The findings are detailed in the article titled “Don’t hold back: Swearing improves strength through state disinhibition,” published in the journal American Psychologist.
As discussions about the role of language and expression in human performance continue, this study underscores the unexpected benefits of swearing as a tool for unlocking hidden strengths in various situations.
