Research from Keele University indicates that swearing can enhance physical performance by unlocking potential strengths. The findings, published in the journal American Psychologist, suggest that uttering expletives during challenging tasks allows individuals to push harder and endure longer.

In a study conducted by Richard Stephens and his team, participants engaged in a chair push-up task while repeating either a self-selected swear word or a neutral word every two seconds. The results revealed that those who used swearing could hold their body weight significantly longer compared to those who opted for neutral expressions. This performance boost appears to stem from swearing’s capacity to foster a state of disinhibition, enhancing confidence and focus.

The experiments involved a total of 192 participants, who were required to complete the physical challenge while responding to surveys assessing their emotional state and mental engagement. These surveys evaluated factors associated with disinhibition, such as positive emotions, task enjoyment, perceived distraction, and self-confidence. The researchers also measured psychological “flow,” referring to a state of deep immersion in an activity.

According to the findings, participants who swore reported heightened levels of psychological flow, which correlates with improved performance. This aligns with earlier research that demonstrated the effectiveness of swearing in physically demanding situations, such as enduring cold exposure and maintaining body weight during exercises.

Stephens noted, “Swearing is literally a calorie neutral, drug-free, low-cost, readily available tool at our disposal for when we need a boost in performance.” The study aims to explore whether the advantages of swearing extend beyond physical challenges, potentially impacting other areas of performance and motivation.

The implications of this research may resonate with athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and anyone facing strenuous tasks. By leveraging the power of swearing, individuals could discover a simple yet effective method to enhance their capabilities during challenging situations.

As the research progresses, the team at Keele University plans to investigate the broader psychological mechanisms at play, potentially offering insights into how language influences performance and emotional states.
