Study Reveals Apps Draining Smartphone Batteries, Netflix Leads
Smartphone users are facing a significant decline in battery life, with devices now requiring daily charging due to increased energy consumption by applications. According to a recent study by the telecommunications company Elevate, smartphone batteries have decreased in lifespan by 23% since 2019. This study highlights that battery performance has not kept pace with overall technological advancements.
Elevate’s research analyzed smartphone user habits to identify the applications that exert the most strain on battery life. The study evaluated key energy factors such as average screen time, data usage, and background activity to calculate average monthly battery usage for each app. The findings reveal the percentage of battery charge consumed by various applications over a 30-day period.
Top Battery-Draining Applications
The analysis identified the top ten applications that are the most demanding on smartphone batteries.
1. **Netflix** ranks as the most energy-intensive app, consuming a staggering 1500% of a full battery charge each month. Users spend an average of 60 hours a month watching films and shows, with an additional 13 hours of background activity contributing to battery drain.
2. Following closely is **TikTok**, which uses 825% of a battery charge. Users typically spend 33 hours per month on the app, with background processes running for 9.9 hours.
3. **YouTube** takes third place, consuming 540% of the battery charge. Users dedicate around 27 hours to the app each month, with background activity accounting for a minor portion of battery usage.
4. In fourth place is **Threads**, using 460% of the battery charge monthly. Users engage with the app for approximately 23 hours, with background processes consuming 6.9 hours.
5. **Snapchat** follows in fifth, with a consumption of 320%. Average usage stands at 16 hours per month, with significant background activity contributing to battery drain.
6. **CapCut** ranks sixth, with a monthly battery usage of 300%. Although it only has 1 hour of background activity, it consumes 30% of battery per hour of use.
7. **Instagram** also consumes 300% of the battery. Users spend 15 hours on the app, with background processes running for 4.5 hours.
8. **Facebook**, draining 270% of battery charge, sees users spending more time (18 hours) on it than on Instagram, with 5.7 hours of background activity adding to its toll.
9. **Spotify** takes ninth place with a monthly drain of 225%. Although it uses only 5% of battery per hour, its background activity extends to 13.5 hours, contributing significantly to battery consumption.
10. Finally, **ChatGPT** rounds out the list with a battery usage of 200%, utilizing 20% of the battery for each hour of use.
The findings underscore a growing concern for users who often overlook the impact of background processes on battery performance. While many users are aware of heavy usage during activities like streaming or video editing, applications such as Spotify are notable for their substantial battery drain even when not actively in use. This highlights the importance of managing background app refresh settings to optimize battery performance.
As smartphone technology continues to evolve, addressing battery efficiency remains a crucial challenge for both users and developers alike.
