The Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA) has introduced a new initiative, the TOP200 NAWA program, aimed at attracting exceptional research talent to Poland. This program seeks to bolster international scientific collaboration and enhance the country’s research capabilities.

The TOP200 NAWA program specifically targets researchers from universities ranked within the top 200 globally, according to prestigious rankings such as the Shanghai Ranking, QS, and THE. By inviting these talented individuals, the initiative aims to strengthen the Polish innovation ecosystem and position the country as a prime destination for researchers.

Program Objectives and Structure

The program has several key objectives. It aims to provide stable employment for foreign researchers for a duration of two to four years at Polish universities or research institutes. Furthermore, it establishes predictable conditions for conducting research while enabling fellows to form their own research teams. One of the main goals is to enhance the connections between academia and industry, facilitating the growth of the Polish research landscape.

TOP200 NAWA offers two participation tracks:

– **Junior Fellow**: Designed for early-career researchers who have obtained their doctorate within the last seven years.
– **Senior Fellow**: Intended for experienced researchers who have a proven track record in leading research teams.

Both tracks ensure that participants receive full-time employment contracts, access to essential research infrastructure, administrative support, and assistance with integration into their host institutions.

Funding for the program amounts to PLN 17 million, with a submission deadline of February 27, 2026. Interested candidates can find suitable academic supervisors or host institutions through the platform www.researchinpoland.org.

Broader Impact and Historical Recognition

The TOP200 NAWA program is open to all scientific fields and aims to foster collaboration with leading research centers worldwide. By increasing the visibility of Polish science on the international stage, it not only expands the capabilities of the Polish research ecosystem but also enhances the attractiveness of scientific careers in the country.

Participants will benefit from secure employment, access to a range of social benefits, and the freedom to conduct their research. Additionally, the program offers opportunities for international networking and career advancement, allowing fellows to collaborate with highly talented researchers.

This initiative is a tribute to **Professor Rudolf Weigl**, a renowned Polish biologist and physician who developed the world’s first effective vaccine against typhus and was nominated multiple times for the Nobel Prize. Born in Austria-Hungary, Professor Weigl was associated with the University of Lviv and the Jagiellonian University, making significant contributions to biology and immunology.

The TOP200 NAWA program not only aims to attract top-tier researchers but also to honor the legacy of a pioneer in the scientific community, further solidifying Poland’s commitment to advancing global scientific research.
