Access to high-quality breast cancer screening has significantly improved in Sault Ste. Marie and surrounding areas with the introduction of a new mammography unit at the Group Health Centre. This unit is designed to enhance local screening capacity and facilitate earlier detection of breast cancer through advanced imaging technology.

The new unit, which is expected to serve more than 6,000 patients annually, features tomosynthesis technology. This multi-dimensional imaging method utilizes low-dose X-rays to produce clearer and more detailed images. Such advancements support more accurate screenings and enable earlier identification of breast cancer, a critical factor when treatment options are most effective.

Community Support Fuels Investment

“This new mammography unit marks an important milestone in diagnostic imaging for our community,” stated Kim Cadham, Manager of Diagnostic Imaging. She emphasized that the facility is now better equipped to provide patients with high-quality breast screening close to home, ensuring they receive accurate and timely results.

The total investment for the new unit amounts to $300,000, made possible through generous community support. A notable contribution of $150,000 came from a group of local donors, alongside additional funding from members of the Algoma District Medical Group, Merrett’s GHC Pharmacies IDA, and various local businesses.

“The generosity of our donors and partners reflects a shared commitment to accessible, high-quality care at Group Health Centre,” remarked Lil Silvano, President and CEO. “Their investment strengthens our screening capacity and helps ensure that patients across the region have access to advanced diagnostic technology that can make a meaningful difference in early detection and outcomes.”

Resumption of Screening Services

As part of the ongoing efforts to enhance breast health services, the Ontario Breast Screening Program at Group Health Centre officially resumed operations on January 21, 2026. Individuals who are eligible are encouraged to schedule a screening or consult with their primary care provider regarding breast health screening options.
