Instagram and Facebook Top List of Most Invasive Apps
A recent study by the IT Asset Management Group (IT-AMG) has identified Instagram and Facebook as the most invasive applications regarding user data collection. The analysis focused on the privacy policies of over 5,000 apps sourced from the Apple App Store, aiming to quantify the extent of data intrusion each app imposes on its users.
To create a comprehensive measure of invasiveness, researchers developed an index based on 46 indicators, which included 35 types of data collected, six reasons for data collection, and five distinct types of user relationships. The study employed a scoring system ranging from zero to 100, wherein the level of privacy intrusion was categorized into five tiers, with “tracked and linked” data being deemed the most intrusive.
Top Invasive Apps Revealed
The findings indicated that both Instagram and Facebook share the top position with an index score of 61.47 out of 100. Each app collects 32 out of 35 potential data types. Among these, 25 data types are linked directly to the user, while seven are both linked and tracked. This extensive collection includes sensitive information such as physical addresses, device identifiers, and user IDs.
In contrast, other popular apps like YouTube and TikTok rank significantly lower, at 27th and 76th respectively, highlighting the stark differences in data collection practices within the entertainment sector.
Following Instagram and Facebook, the third most invasive app is Grab: Taxi Ride, Food Delivery, with a score of 55.57. This app collects 27 data types, with 15 being linked and tracked to the user, including sensitive financial information and precise location data.
Detailed Rankings and Insights
A three-way tie for fourth place occurs among Threads, Meta Business Suite, and Messenger, each achieving a score of 54.53. While these applications collect the same number of data types as the top apps, they do not track user data.
The remaining entries in the top ten include:
– **Nordstrom Rack: Shop Deals** (7th) – Score: 53.62, Collects 22 data types
– **Nordstrom** (8th) – Score: 52.54, Collects 22 data types
– **Pinterest** (9th) – Score: 50.06, Collects 29 data types
– **AE + Aerie** (10th) – Score: 50.01, Collects 21 data types
The study revealed that Photo-Video Apps rank as the most invasive category overall, with an average score of 38.54 out of 100, despite only 23 apps qualifying for the study. Social Networking Apps and Food and Drink Apps follow closely in terms of invasiveness.
The results underscore the extent to which widely used applications, particularly Instagram and Facebook, engage in extensive data collection practices, raising significant privacy concerns for users. This analysis serves as a reminder for consumers to remain vigilant about their data privacy in an increasingly interconnected digital world.
