Innovation Saskatchewan Fuels University of Regina Research with $460,000 Investment
Innovation Saskatchewan has announced a significant investment of $459,095 into three research projects at the University of Regina (U of R). This funding, provided through the Innovation & Science Fund (ISF), aims to enhance research initiatives focused on critical areas such as water security, environmental sustainability, and antimicrobial resistance. The investment is strategically aligned with contributions from the Canada Foundation for Innovation’s John R. Evans Leaders Fund, effectively doubling the financial resources available to U of R researchers.
Warren Kaeding, Minister Responsible for Innovation Saskatchewan, highlighted the importance of this investment, stating, “The U of R is leading research that’s making a real impact and helping shape a stronger, more sustainable future for our province.” He emphasized that these funds are essential in maintaining Saskatchewan’s position at the forefront of innovation, enabling local solutions to address pressing challenges.
Strengthening Research Capacity
The projects supported by this funding will leverage the University of Regina’s established strengths in climate science and population health. These initiatives are in line with Saskatchewan’s key research priorities, which include life sciences, agriculture, and energy. The outcomes from these projects are expected to enhance the province’s ability to attract and retain top-tier researchers, fostering an environment conducive to training the next generation of scientists.
Dr. Chris Yost, Vice-President of Research at U of R, remarked on the investment’s significance: “Innovation Saskatchewan’s investment in research leaders at the University of Regina positions our province at the forefront in innovation, enabling bold research that addresses urgent challenges.” He noted that the support for research not only benefits local communities but also has broader implications across Canada and globally.
Expansion of the Innovation & Science Fund
In light of its commitment to fostering research and innovation, Innovation Saskatchewan has recently expanded the ISF program. The annual funding has nearly doubled to $5.2 million, with the introduction of four new funding streams. These streams will focus on research infrastructure, project development, ecosystem growth, and international collaboration. The expanded program is set to launch on April 1, 2026, with funding decisions anticipated in the summer of 2026.
Since its inception in 2018, the ISF has invested a total of $26.6 million, leveraging an impressive $167 million in external funding to support academic research. Such investments underscore the commitment to advancing scientific inquiry and innovation within Saskatchewan, positioning the province as a leader in addressing some of the most pressing challenges faced today.
