Two men from Brampton, Ontario, are facing serious legal charges following the seizure of over 7.2 million illegal cigarettes on a highway in Saskatchewan. This significant bust occurred on February 21, 2024, during an inspection conducted by the Saskatchewan Highway Patrol at a weigh scale on Highway 1, near Swift Current.

The investigation began when highway patrol officers identified a semi-trailer suspected of transporting illegal tobacco products. They promptly contacted the Swift Current RCMP for further investigation. The operation was further supported by the Saskatchewan Trafficking Response Team, which played a crucial role in the successful seizure.

Upon inspection of the trailer, officers discovered and confiscated 26 pallets of unmarked cigarettes. This operation highlights ongoing efforts to combat illegal tobacco trafficking in the region, which poses risks not only to public health but also to the economy due to lost tax revenue.

The two men have been charged with multiple offenses, including unlawfully possessing tobacco for sale, unlawfully possessing unmarked tobacco, and unlawfully possessing tobacco. They are scheduled to appear in Swift Current Provincial Court on April 1, 2024, to answer these charges.

This incident underscores the challenges law enforcement faces in curbing illegal tobacco trade. Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of vigilance in monitoring transportation routes to mitigate the risks associated with these illegal activities.
