U of T Dentistry Dean Anil Kishen on Leave Amid Racism Probe
The Dean of the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Dentistry, Anil Kishen, is currently on leave while the university investigates the use of racist images during one of his recent lectures. The university announced the investigation following concerns raised about the impact of these images on students and faculty.
In a statement to CP24, Trevor Young, the university’s vice-president and provost, confirmed that Kishen has agreed to fully participate in the investigation. He will remain on leave until the inquiry is concluded. Young noted that Kishen reported using the images without recognizing their antisemitic and discriminatory implications, which adversely affected Jewish students and colleagues, as well as the overall learning environment.
The images in question have since been removed from Kishen’s course materials, and he has issued a direct apology to both his class and the broader Faculty of Dentistry. Young emphasized that Kishen has committed to being more diligent in reviewing course content to foster an inclusive and respectful atmosphere for all students. Additionally, he has pledged to enhance his understanding of antisemitism and other forms of discrimination.
The university has opted not to provide further comments on the ongoing situation. Anil Kishen, who specializes in oral health nanomedicine and endodontics, has had a distinguished academic career. He was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry in April 2025, officially starting his five-year term on July 1, 2025. Kishen has been affiliated with the University of Toronto since 2009.
Despite efforts to reach out for comments, no response has been received from Kishen at this time. The investigation continues as the university seeks to address the implications of this incident and promote a supportive educational environment.
