Dr. Goodridge Advocates for Public Health at Science Meets Parliament
Dr. Lawrence Goodridge, a prominent food microbiologist, is set to emphasize the importance of public health during the upcoming Science Meets Parliament 2025 event in Ottawa on November 17-18, 2025. As a professor in the Department of Food Science and director of the Canadian Research Institute for Food Safety at the University of Guelph, Goodridge has witnessed firsthand the potential benefits of collaboration between scientific communities and government bodies.
His involvement in the Ontario Wastewater Surveillance Initiative demonstrates this cooperation, as the program was designed to detect COVID-19 in community wastewater. This proactive approach allowed researchers, including Goodridge, to establish systems for identifying public health threats before they escalated. “It is imperative for politicians to understand that this is precisely the time to prevent public health emergencies – before they happen,” he stated.
Bridging the Gap Between Science and Politics
Since its inception in 2018, Science Meets Parliament has convened scientists and politicians to facilitate meaningful dialogue. Goodridge pointed out a growing disconnect between the two groups, noting that politicians often operate within electoral timelines while scientists focus on long-term research and development. This disparity can hinder effective policymaking in public health.
As a Canada Research Chair in Foodborne Pathogen Dynamics, Goodridge specializes in the dynamics of pathogens that threaten food safety. His research integrates various scientific disciplines to track contaminants like E. coli, Salmonella, and Listeria, which can impose significant burdens on healthcare systems. “Public health challenges are an existential threat to the survival of this country, or any country,” he remarked, stressing the need for sustained attention to these issues beyond electoral cycles.
Empowering Scientific Research for Policy Change
Goodridge believes it is essential for the public to understand the implications of academic research and for politicians to articulate the importance of science to their constituents. Science Meets Parliament presents an important opportunity for researchers to connect with policymakers, fostering collaborative efforts to address pressing health challenges.
“This is an opportunity to effect policy change and to really solve some of these challenges and improve the already excellent science taking place in Canada,” Goodridge said. He called for increased investment in national programs that prioritize public health.
Following Science Meets Parliament, the University of Guelph will collaborate with the Canadian Science Policy Centre for a conference from November 19-21. As part of this partnership, the university will host a panel session titled “A National Agri-Food Research Strategy: Empowering Cross-Sectoral Partnerships for Greater Impact.” This session aims to further explore how diverse sectors can collaborate to enhance public health and food safety initiatives across Canada.
