Challenge Your Logic Skills on World Logic Day, January 14
World Logic Day, recognized by UNESCO, is celebrated annually on January 14. This day focuses on promoting the study of deductive reasoning and logical thinking. As the event approaches next week, enthusiasts are invited to engage in a thought-provoking challenge that tests their logical reasoning skills.
The puzzle involves three middle managers—Andy, Bea, and Celine—who find themselves with a jar containing ten cookies. Each manager takes turns reaching into the jar to take cookies for themselves, starting with Andy, followed by Bea, and then Celine. The managers are free to choose how many cookies to take during their turn, but they must adhere to specific conditions that complicate their choices.
The first condition dictates that no one wants to end up with either the most or the least cookies. Achieving the highest quantity may appear greedy, while having the least may seem unappealing. Additionally, they want to avoid a tie for the highest or lowest counts. The second condition, which is also important, is their desire to maximize their cookie count. Thus, while they prioritize the first condition, both elements weigh on their decisions.
Given these constraints, the challenge lies in determining how many cookies each manager will ultimately take. The managers are not allowed to communicate or form alliances, which adds an extra layer of complexity to their decision-making. They must act rationally and in their own best interests, considering not only their own outcomes but also the potential choices of their colleagues.
As the puzzle unfolds, participants are encouraged to think strategically about their approach. The solution to this intriguing problem will be revealed later today, at 17:00 UK time. Until then, enthusiasts are invited to share their favorite illogical arguments and engage in discussions about the nature of logical reasoning.
For those looking for more challenging puzzles, the Royal Statistical Society offers a Christmas Puzzle competition, showcasing a variety of brain teasers. Since 2015, Deniz Sarikaya, who has contributed to the promotion of World Logic Day, has been setting puzzles bi-weekly. Anyone with a great puzzle idea is welcome to reach out via email to contribute to future challenges.
As World Logic Day approaches, the excitement builds not only for the celebration of logic but also for the intellectual engagement that comes with solving such puzzles. Whether you are a seasoned puzzle solver or new to the world of logic games, this day offers an opportunity to sharpen your reasoning skills while enjoying the camaraderie of fellow enthusiasts.
