Young Family Transforms Home into Bright Summer Sanctuary
A young couple with three children has successfully transformed their home in Long Branch, Etobicoke, into a vibrant and functional space, designed to accommodate their family’s needs. They enlisted the expertise of designer Jaclyn Gray from Gray Interiors and collaborated with Westrose Construction Inc. to reimagine their once-dark residence into a bright, inviting sanctuary.
The transformation is described by Gray as “an ode to endless summer,” where every room offers a unique personality while contributing to a harmonious overall aesthetic. The design features a playful mix of colors, textures, and durable materials aimed at withstanding the energetic lifestyle of the family.
Upon entering the home, the cheerful powder room sets the tone with its wildflower wallpaper, complemented by a periwinkle blue vanity and polished brass accents. “I wanted to honour the potential of the space by bringing in natural light wherever possible,” Gray stated. She emphasized that even the darkest home can be illuminated with a palette reflective of its inhabitants.
The project began with a vision to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere year-round. Inspired by nature, Gray utilized soft blues, sun-washed neutrals, and vibrant golden tones to evoke a sense of relaxed optimism. This approach is evident throughout the home, particularly in areas like the children’s bathroom, which features a tub-shower combo wrapped in horizontal aqua Zellige tiles, enhancing its energy and charm.
The kitchen serves as the heart of the home, designed for various activities, from cooking to family gatherings. A large island, topped with quartz and featuring sculptural fluting, anchors the space both visually and functionally. “The kitchen is the true family HQ,” Gray noted, highlighting its role in daily life. Panel-ready appliances blend seamlessly into the cabinetry, allowing the warm finishes and thoughtful details to take center stage.
In addition to the kitchen, the home features durable European oak hardwood flooring that runs throughout the space, providing continuity and a low-maintenance solution ideal for a busy household. The design incorporates playful elements alongside enduring materials, such as brushed brass fixtures that add a subtle warmth to each room.
Gray’s design philosophy avoids fleeting trends, focusing instead on evoking feelings of softness, craftsmanship, and warmth. She explained, “It’s about letting the colours speak, not shout,” ensuring that the tones remain fresh yet family-friendly.
With three young boys, the choice of hard-wearing materials was crucial. The oak flooring effectively disguises dirt, while washable paint keeps the walls bright and easy to maintain. Custom cabinetry and hidden storage solutions contribute to an organized environment, which Gray believes brings a sense of calm to a lively household.
Upstairs, the primary ensuite offers a serene retreat from the bustling main floor. Designed to evoke a spa-like ambiance, the bathroom features porcelain tiles that mimic soft travertine, a deep soaker tub, and a spacious walk-in shower filled with natural light. “Heated floors, brushed brass, and moody lighting create that private spa feel,” Gray remarked.
Thoughtful lighting choices, including sculptural pendants and sconces, add a touch of sophistication to the home. Gray encourages those looking to create uplifting spaces to start with light, incorporate gentle colors, and add personal touches that bring joy.
Reflecting on the project, Gray still finds herself enchanted by the powder room, stating, “It’s the smallest space, but we went bold and it created a mood that ripples throughout.” This transformation not only enhances the family’s living experience but also exemplifies the potential of thoughtful design to create spaces that resonate with joy and functionality.
