Whispers Pub Memorabilia Auction Supports Local Food Bank
A fundraising auction featuring memorabilia from the now-closed Whispers Pub in Westboro has successfully raised funds for the Westboro Region Food Bank. The beloved pub, which ceased operations in 2022, was located at the intersection of Richmond Road and Tweedsmuir Avenue. The auction was organized by the food bank with support from Y Street Capital, the company that acquired the pub and plans to develop the site further.
The initiative allowed community members to bid on items that held sentimental value while contributing to a local cause. “Locals will be able to take home a piece of Whispers, while giving back to their community,” stated the Westboro Village Business Improvement Area (BIA).
Community Impact and Personal Stories
The auction took place at All Saints Anglican Church on Saturday afternoon, with online bids accepted for a limited time. Items up for auction included vintage kitchenware, sports memorabilia, framed photographs, and pieces of the pub itself, such as a sign that read, “Thank you for choosing Whispers.”
Judy Lincoln, executive director of the Westboro Village BIA, emphasized the significance of the food bank. “They serve 100 households or approximately 700 people every single week, so anything we can do to raise awareness and funds to help them continue to support our neighbours is crucial,” she said.
The event not only provided a nostalgic experience for former patrons but also highlighted personal connections to the pub. Lincoln noted, “It’s been amazing having people come in. We had a couple here this morning who met at Whispers Pub and have been married for years. One of the owners from back in the day came in to pick up items his children remembered and loved from the pub.”
Support for Local Food Initiatives
The Westboro Region Food Bank operates from its location at 354 Madison Ave. The organization plays a vital role in providing food support to those in need within the community. Lincoln encouraged everyone to engage with their local food banks, stating, “It’s really important to find your local community food bank. They’re doing amazing work. And know the businesses in your communities are also supporting their neighbours through initiatives like this.”
As the community continues to rally around the food bank, the auction of Whispers Pub memorabilia serves as a reminder of the lasting connections formed in local establishments, and the importance of supporting those in need.
