On February 25, 2025, communities across the West Kootenay region will don pink attire in observance of Pink Shirt Day, an event aimed at promoting kindness and raising awareness about bullying. This year’s theme, “Sprinkle Kindness,” emphasizes the importance of compassion and respect among children and youth.

Background and Significance of Pink Shirt Day

Established in Canada, Pink Shirt Day highlights the ongoing issue of bullying and supports initiatives that nurture healthy self-esteem in children. Local governments, agencies, and businesses across the West Kootenay are expected to participate by wearing pink, further uniting the community in this cause. Many school districts, including those within School District 20, have embraced Pink Shirt Day as part of their Diversity and Respect Week, which runs from February 23 to February 27, 2025.

This week-long celebration serves as an opportunity for schools in Greater Trail and Castlegar to engage students in activities and lessons that promote understanding, inclusion, and respect for diverse identities. Events will be held in local public schools, encouraging dialogue and fostering a sense of belonging among students.

The Origins of Pink Shirt Day

The history of Pink Shirt Day can be traced back to 2007, when a group of teenagers in Nova Scotia organized a protest to support a Grade 9 student who was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. They purchased 50 pink tank tops and wore them to school the next day, sparking a movement that has since gained international recognition, with participation from nearly 180 countries.

Since its inception, the CKNW Kids’ Fund has played a pivotal role in funding anti-bullying programs through the sale of pink merchandise. Since 2008, the fund has ensured that 100% of net proceeds are allocated to organizations that support children’s self-esteem. In 2025 alone, the initiative funded programs that positively impacted over 45,000 children and youth.

Bullying itself manifests in various forms, including physical, verbal, social, and cyberbullying. It often results in significant emotional challenges for victims, such as anxiety, low self-esteem, and depression. The act of wearing pink on this day symbolizes a collective stand against bullying and a commitment to fostering a supportive environment for all.

As Pink Shirt Day approaches, individuals are encouraged to wear pink to demonstrate their commitment to anti-bullying efforts, reinforcing the message of kindness and empathy in schools and communities.
