Victoria Non-Profit Marks 10 Years of Big Latke Lunch Celebration
On December 22, members of Congregation Emanu-El took over the kitchen at Our Place in Victoria to celebrate the tenth anniversary of their popular Big Latke Lunch. This annual event aims to spread joy during the Hanukkah season, serving as a reminder of community spirit and togetherness.
Rabbi Eli Herb, who leads Emanu-El, Canada’s oldest surviving synagogue, expressed the significance of the event. “It’s a pleasure and a privilege to bring some festival joy and spread some Hanukkah light with our neighbours and friends at Our Place,” he stated. This sentiment reflects the essence of Hanukkah, an eight-day holiday commemorating the re-dedication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, following the Maccabees’ revolt against their Greek-Syrian oppressors in the second century B.C.
Latkes, the traditional potato pancakes, are a highlight of the celebration. At this year’s event, the congregation expects to serve latkes accompanied by generous portions of sour cream and apple sauce. In line with previous years, they plan to provide meals for approximately 450 vulnerable citizens in Greater Victoria.
To prepare for the event, the team will utilize around 50 kg of potatoes, 15 litres of sour cream, 100 litres of vegetable soup, and 50 heads of lettuce. These figures illustrate the scale of the effort and the commitment of volunteers who dedicate their time to ensure that the community enjoys this festive occasion.
The Big Latke Lunch not only nourishes those in need but also fosters a sense of belonging and community connection. As the congregation celebrates a decade of this cherished tradition, it serves as a reminder of the importance of kindness and unity, especially during the holiday season.
