University of Guelph Student Wins Prestigious National Scholarship
A student from the University of Guelph has made history by becoming the first recipient from her institution of the prestigious White Rose Scholarship, aimed at supporting female engineers. Kaitlyn Root, currently pursuing a Master of Engineering degree, is one of just 14 women across Canada to receive this significant award, which provides $50,000 for further studies in engineering.
The White Rose Scholarship honors the memory of the 14 women tragically killed on December 6, 1989, during a shooting at Polytechnique Montréal. This year marks a pivotal expansion of the program, which previously awarded only one scholarship annually. The recipients are selected by a jury made up of deans from six Canadian engineering schools, who evaluate candidates based on academic excellence, technical achievements, and their commitment to the greater good.
Achievements and Community Engagement
Root’s journey in engineering has been marked by notable achievements and a commitment to sustainability. A former varsity fencing athlete, she was named Most Valuable Player in 2023, demonstrating her ability to excel both academically and athletically. As the engineering director for iGEM Guelph, she led award-winning projects focused on innovative technologies, such as 3D-printable lab tools and bioremediation scaffolds. Her team’s efforts earned gold and silver medals at the iGEM Grand Jamboree in Paris, France, showcasing her leadership and ingenuity.
In addition to her technical accomplishments, Root received the Helen Grace Tucker Design Prize for her capstone project, which involved an innovative filtration system designed to remove pharmaceutical contaminants from wastewater. Her dedication to environmental issues extends beyond her studies, as she actively engages youth through educational workshops with the Ontario Nature Youth Council.
Research Focus and Future Aspirations
Currently, Root’s graduate research is aligned with her passion for sustainability. She is exploring the valorization of dairy waste streams using microbial fuel cells, a promising avenue for sustainable energy production. Her work not only aims to advance technological solutions but also seeks to address pressing environmental challenges.
Established in 2014, the White Rose Scholarships serve as a tribute to the lives taken in 1989 and aim to inspire future generations of female engineers. By supporting women like Root, the program helps to revive the dreams that were lost and encourages the next wave of innovators in the engineering field.
