Tumbler Ridge Shooting Sparks Controversy Over Anti-Trans Rhetoric
The mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia on February 11, 2023, has ignited a fierce backlash against the transgender community. The suspect, identified as an 18-year-old transgender woman named Jesse Van Rootselaar, has become the focal point of a heated debate, with commentators and media outlets attributing the violence to her identity.
Immediately following the police’s announcement of a suspect described as a “female in a dress,” online discussions erupted. Critics labeled the incident as a manifestation of “transanity,” launching attacks against trans individuals, politicians, and healthcare experts. Right-wing media outlets intensified this narrative, suggesting that the acceptance of transgender people and even the presence of a Pride flag at the school contributed to the tragedy.
During a livestream on Rebel News, commentator Lise Merle posed alarming questions about the implications of the Pride flag, stating, “Do you know what that flag on schools in Canada means now? Danger, danger.” This rhetoric is reminiscent of a troubling trend observed by Alejandra Caraballo, a U.S. lawyer who has documented the harassment and hate directed at the transgender community. Caraballo noted that in the wake of mass shootings, it has become common for social media users to falsely link trans individuals to the violence.
The data, however, tells a different story. According to a fact sheet published by GLAAD in 2025, of the 5,748 mass shootings in the United States from 2013 to 2025, only five, or 0.1 percent, were committed by transgender individuals. Furthermore, GLAAD asserts there is no evidence supporting claims of increasing radicalization or violence among transgender people.
Caraballo pointed out that this pattern of scapegoating has been observable for several years. She recalled the 2022 school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, where a random photo of a trans woman was falsely circulated as being associated with the shooter. This tactic reemerged after the Tumbler Ridge incident, with an account called The Pleb Reporter posting images of an unrelated trans woman, which were subsequently shared widely across social media platforms.
Analyst Steven Rai, who has examined Van Rootselaar’s social media activity, reported that while she expressed struggles with mental health issues, there is no indication that her transgender identity played a role in the shooting.
The rhetoric surrounding the shooting has raised concerns about hate speech. Evan Balgord, executive director of the Canadian Anti-Hate Network, stated that the language employed by some commentators fits the definition of hate speech as recognized by Canadian courts. Balgord emphasized that using real tragedies to demonize a marginalized group is unacceptable.
During the Rebel News livestream, Merle described the shooting as “a predictable act of trans madness” and suggested that being transgender is a mental illness. Such statements reflect a broader narrative where right-wing figures attempt to link trans identities with violence, leading to calls for the rollback of human rights protections for transgender individuals.
The situation has also sparked political discourse. Tara Armstrong, an Independent MLA elected as a British Columbia Conservative, has made several posts on social media blaming the shooting on the suspect’s transgender identity. Balgord noted that this kind of discrimination echoes past prejudices directed at other marginalized communities.
For decades, many trans individuals have reported improvements in mental health through access to gender-affirming care and acceptance of their identities. Yet, as Jaigris Hodson, a professor at Royal Roads University, observes, the narrative surrounding transgender individuals is being distorted by politicians and media figures. This trend has led to an increase in anti-trans sentiment online, particularly on platforms like X, formerly known as Twitter.
Despite this, Hodson noted a significant pushback against anti-trans rhetoric on forums like Reddit, indicating a complex dialogue surrounding these issues. “What is troubling is the degree to which the trans community has been scapegoated, not just in this incident, but more broadly,” she stated.
The Tumbler Ridge shooting and the subsequent fallout highlight a concerning intersection of violence, media narratives, and discrimination against the transgender community. As discussions continue, the need for accurate representation and understanding of trans issues remains critical in fostering a more inclusive society.
